Das Vaterland was an Austrian daily newspaper with a Catholic-aristocratic orientation that appeared in Vienna between 1860 and 1911 . It had the sub-title newspaper for the Austrian monarchy .
meaning
The sheet had a relatively small edition of presumably a maximum of 8000 copies. In 1905 there were only around 5000 pieces and the number continued to decline. A first trial sheet appeared on August 21, 1860, the first issue on September 1 of the same year. Despite its low distribution, Das Vaterland was an important newspaper in the Viennese press landscape and also the leading Catholic newspaper of the monarchy. The most important rubric was the political section of the paper, which dealt primarily with foreign policy issues. Among the founders of the newspaper were Bohemian aristocrats, not least because of this, the editors advocated a federal form of government. Furthermore, it was directed against the nationalism of Germans and other peoples; There was restraint towards other opponents, such as the liberals. Despite the aristocratic orientation, Das Vaterland also propagated democratic and social reforms at times. For example, in 1869 an - albeit limited - electoral reform was advocated and the social doctrine of Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch was supported. With the appearance of the Reichspost , a dispute began between the two Catholic papers, which the Reichspost finally won . Formerly directed against Christian-social ideas (such as a general right to vote), Das Vaterland supported the Christian-social election candidates as early as 1911.
