Ried in der Riedmark is a market town in Upper Austria in the Perg district in the Mühlviertel with 4307 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). The municipality belongs to the judicial district of Perg .

geography

Ried in der Riedmark is around 300 m above sea level in the lower Mühlviertel .

The extension is from north to south 8.5 km, from west to east 7.8 km. The total area is 32.6 km². 19% of the area is forested, 70.9% of the area is used for agriculture.

The Rieder Bach , a tributary of the Gusen to the Danube, flows through the municipality.

history

Memorial stone of the Mühlviertel manhunt

The first written mention of Ried goes back to the year 823, when the place was handed over to the diocese of Passau together with Naarn , Saxen and Ardagger in the document Confirmatio Ludovici Pii .

Originally located in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria , the place belonged to the Duchy of Austria since the 12th century . Since 1490 it has been assigned to the Principality of Austria ob der Enns .

During the Napoleonic Wars , the place was occupied several times.

Since 1918 the place belongs to the federal state of Upper Austria . After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . In 1945 Upper Austria was restored.

Population development Ried in der Riedmark

Towards the end of the Second World War , the place became known for the Mühlviertler manhunt (euphemistically Mühlviertler Hasenjagd ), in which Nazi organizations and several residents of the place hunted down Soviet officers who had fled the Mauthausen concentration camp in February 1945 . However, there were some courageous citizens who hid fleeing people at risk of their own lives, so that of the 500 at least eleven gained their freedom. All the others were murdered where they were found during the three-week hunt. To commemorate this war crime and the courageous helpers of the survivors, a memorial stone was erected near the church in 2002.

Population development

In 1991 the community had 3438 inhabitants according to the census, in 2001 it had 3751 inhabitants. In 2007 the community exceeded the 4,000-inhabitant limit.

Split ; right three times split by silver and red; on the left, in gold, a natural-colored (brown) tree stump growing out of the base of the shield , in which a beard with a silver blade and brown handle is placed to the left, behind it green, wavy soil with three green forest trees .
