Radio Free Asia
Radio Free Asia is a non-commercial radio station based in Washington, DC
It was founded by the US Congress in 1994 and is funded by US sources. The station is subordinate to the United States Agency for Global Media (USAGM, formerly "Broadcasting Board of Governors"), which is responsible for the operation of all non-military international broadcasts of the USA and has relations with the State Department . The worldwide network of transmitters and relay stations available to the broadcaster is maintained by the International Broadcasting Bureau (IBB).
The station broadcasts programs on four channels in nine different languages to Central and Southeast Asia . According to its own information, its tasks include promoting democratic values and freedom by spreading facts and ideas . It is broadcast in:
- Mandarin ( Standard Chinese )
- Cantonese
- Burmese
- Korean (for North Korea )
- Laotian
- Khmer
- Tibetan
- Uighur
- Vietnamese
The programs are produced in the style of Radio Free Europe and broadcast on shortwave . Transmitters are used in Armenia , Hawaii , Kazakhstan , the Marianas , Mongolia , Palau , Sri Lanka and Tajikistan .
