history

The oldest mention of Castle Kreuzen, built around 900, as Chroucen comes from the year 1147. Originally located in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria, the place belonged to the Duchy of Austria since the 12th century. Since 1490 it has been assigned to the Principality of Austria ob der Enns .

The so-called Franzosenhütte, an old granary at the Rotaigner in Unterdörfl 29, where bullet holes in the wood and small dents in the sheet iron can still be seen today, reminds of the occupation of the place during the Napoleonic Wars .

The originally four cadastral communities and from 1850 independent local communities Kreuzen, Kalmberg, Dörfl and Wetzelstein as well as parts of the cadastral community Panholz assigned to Grein were combined in 1875 to form the local community Kreuzen. The market town refers to a market law documented in 1482.

Since 1973, following on from the long tradition as a Kneipp and spa resort, the official name "Bad Kreuzen" has been used for the market town.

Health resort

Since 1835 there was a modest health spa in Kreuzen that used cold water as a medicinal product. From 1912 at the latest, the cold water sanatorium was operated all year round. During the First World War the Kurhaus served as a military hospital. During the Second World War , ethnic German refugees found refuge there. The Kurhaus came to the Austrian Red Cross in 1959 through Norwegian European Aid . In 1984 the Kurhaus and some local inns housed around 400 refugees. Today's "Sanatorium of the Sisters of Carmel" was founded in 1972.
