history

On November 25, 1287, "Swertberg" was first mentioned as a forum (= market) in a document from Duke Albrecht I. At that time the place belonged to the Regensburg lordship of Windegg, which was owned by Leuthold I von Kuenring . Between 1357 and 1570 the market was called "Schwerdberg" and was then named Schwertberg under the new owner Hans Tschernembl .

In 1715 and 1822, Schwertberg was in flames, almost the entire market was destroyed. During the Danube flood in 2002 , the market town was badly affected by the flood-carrying Danube tributary Aist . The construction work took more than a year.

Originally located in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria, the place belonged to the Duchy of Austria since the 12th century. Since 1490 it has been assigned to the Principality of Austria ob der Enns .

During the Napoleonic Wars , the place was occupied several times.

Since 1918 the place belongs to the federal state of Upper Austria. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria took place. Schwertberg played an essential role in the Nazi war crime of the Mühlviertel hare hunt . Found refugees from the Mauthausen concentration camp were shot in the courtyard of the community office that still exists today. The most famous resistance fighter from Schwertberg is Anna Langthaler , who hid two Russian prisoners of war, Mikhail Rybtschinskij and Nikolai Zimkolo, on her farm for three months. Her daughter Anna Hackl , winner of the Golden Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria, tells of her experiences at schools and commemorative events as a contemporary witness.

Resident development

From the first few years after the Second World War, the appearance of the town changed to a great extent. Now building is not only busy in the market center, the rows of houses also extend further out into the plain, occupying ridges and flanks. In 1995 the core of the community had more than 600 buildings (around 1930 there were 200), not including peripheral areas.

Of the 1100 buildings in the entire municipality, only around 300 are more than 50 years old. Between 1961 and 1971 alone, 200 houses were built.

In 1991 the community had 4532 inhabitants according to the census, in 2001 it had 5164 inhabitants.
