The Castle Poneggen is a former palace complex in Upper Austria and is located near the resort Schwertberg in Mühlviertel . The castle was first mentioned in the 13th century and converted into a factory in the 18th century. Today the house called Das Stöckl is used as a residential building.

history

The castle was first mentioned in 1297 as a manor under Hermann von Ponke. In 1307 it is declared a fiefdom . Around 1380 a Hans der Lasberger is named as the owner, otherwise no documents about the castle from this time have been preserved. In 1537 Hans Wankhammer bequeathed the building to Hans and Michael Schätzl and Andre Stockinger. These heirs sold it to the brothers Hans, Lassla and Andreas Prager on March 9, 1538 . In 1598 Friedrich Prager bequeathed the castle to his wife Elisabeth Freiin von Roggendorf, who was, however, abroad. Since she was a Protestant, her brother-in-law Wilhelm von Starhemberg leased the castle to Christoph Ernst Kölnböck von Ottsdorf, the keeper of the Schwertberg estate . In 1635 it became the property of Count Leonhard Helfried von Meggau , who died in 1644. The two castles in the village came to Susanne von Meggau, who brought her into her marriage to Count Heinrich Wilhelm von Starhemberg.

In 1651 Johann Jakob Offner followed as owner of the castle. In 1655 it burned down almost completely and was rebuilt in the following years. After Johann's death, the castle went to Count Johann Ferdinand von Salburg , who united the two lords in Schwertberg. After him, Count Lobgott von Kuefstein and Graf Grundacker von Thürheim came as owners. In 1764, Count Thürheim sold the castle to a stocking factory, which converted the castle into a small factory building. The factory existed until 1818 and in 1768 received the monopoly for its products from Empress Maria Theresa . The owners of the castle appear: around 1770 a Franz Güglleithner, until 1798 an Augustin Glück, until 1803 Johann Kaspar Zötl and 1812 Johann Nepomuk Wildauer. His widow sold the building to Johann Pautsch after 1821. In 1841 Ferdinand Wall, in 1899 Baroness Therese Schniter, was named as the owner and from 1911 it was owned by the Count Hoyos . It passed from their possession to Karl Lammerhuber. Rental apartments are currently housed in the former castle.

construction

The castle has a former free-standing tower that is hardly higher than the roof ridge. Above the portal is the year 1531, which probably comes from Hans Wankhammer. At the front, the surrounding wall is still partially visible and two baroque stone pillars are still standing. The newly installed windows on the building can be easily distinguished from the originals, as they have no stone cladding. There is nothing left of the former farmyard today.

Surname

The name Poneggen (Pöniken) comes from the Old Slavic word Ponikva for water hole.

Poneggen stocking factory

After silkworm breeding by the Thürheimers was not profitable, the castle was converted into a small stocking factory. Maria Theresia granted the monopoly for the products in 1768. Small houses were built for the workers (today's row of houses). Already in 1807 the owner changed and in 1818 production was stopped and the building was sold. The Häuselzeile is one of the oldest row house settlements in Austria.
