history
Several finds, including stone tools and arrowheads, prove the settlement of today's Tragweiner local area during the Stone Age . The old “mule track”, a trade route that ran from the Danube to the north, led past Tragwein. At the beginning of the Iron Age , the first settlement by Illyrians is assumed, since the names of the nearby rivers suggest Illyrian names.
From approx. 500 BC A Celtic settlement is assumed. Slavic names indicate the presence of Slavic settlers during the migration of peoples , as can be seen in the example of Stranzberg , which can be derived from the Slavic strans ( border , clearing border ). Later, Germanic settlers settled in the Tragwein area, as in the entire Mühlviertel, who also brought the German language with them between the 8th and 12th centuries.
The area between the Danube , Aist , Naarn and the Nordwald was confirmed in 853 by King Ludwig the German to the monastery of Sankt Emmeram near Regensburg , including Bavaria and Slavs, free and unfree , as the text of the document puts it. The Christianization of the region began with the establishment of a large parish in Naarn , which was mentioned in 823 .
That settlement in the municipality where today's tragwein developed was first mentioned in a document in 1230. Around the middle or end of the 13th century, the place was elevated to a market . This justified the implementation of weekly markets and at least one fair. In 1297 Tragwein became an independent parish, which encompassed a very large, but not precisely delimited area. It should have included many of today's neighboring communities. In many other, now larger, settlements, parishes were often only founded centuries later, for example in Perg , where a separate parish was only founded in 1666.
Tragwein has been part of the Principality of Austria ob der Enns since 1490 . During the Napoleonic Wars , the place was occupied several times. Since 1918 the place belongs to the federal state of Upper Austria. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria took place.

The name Tragwein is of Slavic origin and could come from the personal name Dragun (the "precious"). This corresponds to the Slavic word "Dragovina", which came from the Old Slavic "drago" for "expensive". It is also speculated that it was derived from the West Slavic ethnic group of the “Drewaner” (Drevani), who named some of their settlements “Derva” after their southern Dalmatian place of origin (including “Drawey”, “Drawein”, “Drawehn”). In the later Middle Ages , "Drawehn" was a name for "woodland".
The development of the names Tragwein in the course of history is documented by various documents.
