history

Hagenberg Castle was first mentioned in 1139. Since 1490 the place has been assigned to the Principality of Austria ob der Enns . In the following centuries, this castle was continuously expanded by a large number of owners until a large Renaissance palace complex was built in the 16th and 17th centuries . This burned down in 1728 as a result of a lightning strike. After the reconstruction in the 18th century, the castle changed hands several times.

During the Napoleonic Wars , the place was occupied several times. Since 1918 the place belongs to the federal state of Upper Austria. Even before Austria was annexed to the German Reich in 1938, there were propaganda campaigns by members of the banned NSDAP in the Pregartner area . On June 24, 1934, a "swastika fire" was lit in Hagenberg, which led to a forest fire in which 2000 cubic meters of firewood and a larger part of the estate administration's young forest were destroyed. After Austria was annexed to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau and became part of the neighboring community of Pregarten . As the first mayor of the National Socialists, Karl Radler took over the office of Johann Stöger on March 12, 1938. After 1945 Hagenberg was in the Soviet zone of occupation and after 1955 the infrastructure was expanded and rebuilt.

Since the beginning of the last century, the structure of the palace gradually began to deteriorate until the complex finally became uninhabitable in the 1960s. In the 1980s, the facility was rebuilt, revitalized and then used as a training facility through an initiative of the municipality and the castle association with financial support from the state of Upper Austria . In 1988 the Riepl / Moser team of architects and their work were awarded the Upper Austrian State Architecture Prize. With the establishment of the Hagenberg software park , a technology center for computer-related topics, above the castle near the old Meierhof in 1989, the place has experienced an enormous boom since the 2000s and is already known as the “ Silicon Valley of Austria”.

On January 28, 1991, Hagenberg in the Mühlkreis was named a market town.

From 1945 to 1997 the ÖVP always achieved an absolute majority and was unable to recapture it in 2003 or 2009. Until 2015, the SPÖ was always the second strongest party, but in 2015 they lost this place. In 2003, the Greens ousted the FPÖ as the third strongest party and even managed to achieve second place in 2015.

Economy and Infrastructure

RISC in Hagenberg Castle

Local supply

For its size, Hagenberg has a relatively good local supply , the structure of which has, however, changed significantly over the past decades. While local businesses (inns, butchers, bakers, hairdressers, two general stores) provided local supplies until the late 1980s and early 1990s, the range of products on offer changed noticeably with the establishment of the first supermarket on the outskirts in the 1990s. Today, larger business settlements, mainly accessible by car, in the periphery of the neighboring communities of Pregarten and Unterweitersdorf represent great competition for local supply in the center of Hagenberg. To counter this development, the Neue Mitte business building was built on the area of a former children's playground houses a pharmacy, a business premises of the Diakoniewerk , an information center of the software park, a second hairdressing studio, a general practitioner, a pulmonologist, a pizzeria and a masseuse. With a long continuity, there is a bank branch of Raiffeisenbank and Sparkasse each in town. In 2008 the post office was closed despite numerous protests and a resolution by the local council and the postal services and the services of the PSK-Bank were transferred to the Diakoniewerk as a “post partner”.

Research and training

The Softwarepark Hagenberg is a technology center and combines business, research and training with a focus on software. Since the founding of the software park in 1989 by Bruno Buchberger , over 1000 jobs and 1500 study places have been created in 50 companies, 10 research institutes and various training facilities under his leadership. The technology park offers a total of 17,700 m² of office space in the office buildings Meierhof, IT-Center, amsec, COUNT IT Group, Arbeit & Wohnen and Schloss Hagenberg , 8,600 m² of training space in the two university buildings and business space of around 1,100 m² in the New Center .

As one of the largest independent research centers in the field of software in Austria, the Software Competence Center Hagenberg (SCCH) is located in the Meierhof office building.

Educational institutions

The RISC (Research Institute for Symbolic Computation) of the Johannes Kepler University Linz has been located in the revitalized castle in Hagenberg since 1989 . In 1992, the redesign of the Gutmeierhof began into an office building, in which, in addition to numerous small but also larger companies and university institutes (RISC-Linz, FAW, FLLL), the first courses of the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences were finally settled in a completely newly constructed building on the Move into campus. In 2004 another large building of the FH-Hagenberg was handed over to its purpose to accommodate the growing number of students and to offer an optimal infrastructure. In October 2012, the FH3 building was opened, which, in addition to rooms for teaching, also houses a Research Center of the FH Upper Austria.

A primary school is available in the village . The educational offer in Hagenberg was expanded in the autumn of 2003 by a federal upper level secondary school (BORG) for communication. The BORG Hagenberg is a branch of the Bundes-Oberstufenrealgymnasium in Linz .

Hagenberg has a connection to the route network of the Austrian Federal Railways ( Summerauer Bahn ) via the nearby Pregarten train station (approx. 20 minutes' walk from the center ). In addition to the regular operation of the Postbus, the timetable is supplemented by shift bus routes to the Linz industrial area.

The regional bus route 343 has been connecting Pregarten with Hagenberg and Gutau since September 13, 2010. Before that, from December 2004 to September 2010, the 3-market bus ran between the closely neighboring communities of Hagenberg, Pregarten and Wartberg . He opened up the most important settlement areas of these three communities on two routes. For the 3-market bus , the operating communities of Hagenberg, Pregarten and Wartberg were awarded the VCÖ mobility award for the state of Upper Austria in 2009.

On September 22nd, 2009 an express bus line went into operation, which connects the Johannes Kepler University in Linz with the Hagenberg software park with a journey time of 22 minutes . The departure and arrival times are coordinated with the trains at the Pregarten station and the tram traffic in Linz Auhof.

In January 2010, the Hagenberg municipal council, as well as the municipalities of Pregarten, Engerwitzdorf, Gallneukirchen and Unterweitersdorf, passed a resolution for the establishment of a light rail connection Linz - Gallneukirchen - Pregarten.
