  • The Mühlviertel expressway S 10 is an expressway in Upper Austria and part of the Europastraße 55 . Of the approx. 38 km long stretch between Unterweitersdorf and the state border to the Czech Republic near Wullowitz , 22 km are in operation. The section to Freistadt Nord has the status of a motorway in terms of road traffic law and requires a vignette or toll .

After its completion, the S 10 is to connect the Mühlkreis A 7 motorway with the planned Czech D 3 motorway at Dolní Dvořiště and run largely parallel to the existing Mühlviertler Straße B 310.

    history

Originally, the Mühlviertel expressway was planned in the 1970s as the Mühlkreis Autobahn across the area west of Neumarkt im Mühlkreis and Summerau (west of Freistadt) to the state border, but was discarded for ecological and hydrological reasons ( Gusental along the former horse-drawn railway). In 1983 the A 7 between the end of the autobahn at Unterweitersdorf and the state border was deleted from the federal highways law. Instead, a "Mühlkreis Schnellstraße" (S 21) should be built. The background to these changes were traffic forecasts for the section, which did not justify the construction of a motorway. In fact, financial reasons also played a role. With the amendment to the Federal Roads Act in 1986, the section was finally downgraded for execution as B 125 “Prager Strasse”.

With the political change in the Czech Republic and the opening of the borders, the volume of traffic in the section on the existing federal road increased significantly. In 1993, the Czech Transport Minister Jan Stráský also announced the construction of a motorway from Prague via Budweis to the border at Wullowitz. In 1999 the route was therefore included in the Federal Roads Act, Directory 3 (Federal Roads) as the B 310 "Mühlviertler Strasse", according to which "connections to public roads and paths [...] in the open air were only allowed in the form of special junctions". In 2002 the B 310 was transferred to Directory 2 - Federal Highways - of the Federal Roads Act as S 10.

After the corridor investigations around the year 2000, the route was determined in the following years up to 2004. In March 2005 the submission project and the information events in the communities took place. The environmental impact assessment (EIA) ran between 2007 and 2009 and was completed in July 2009. Then, in autumn of the same year, construction began on what was then ASFINAG's largest construction project.

    South section

    Part 1

The first completed section in 2012

On July 30, 2012, the first section (section 1) was opened near Unterweitersdorf . The 2.5 km long section includes the transition to the A 7 (Unterweitersdorf junction) and the Unterweitersdorf junction, which connects the S 10 via a new roundabout with the state roads B 124 , B 125 and B 310 . The old junction in Unterweitersdorf, which linked the A 7 at its end to the B 310 , was removed in the course of the construction work. As before the A 7 , the S 10 now joins the B 310 towards Freistadt at the end of the first section - shortly after the new Unterweitersdorf junction .

    Duration

The western tube of the originally 1.3 km long Neumarkt tunnel was already used as part of the B 310 road. After completion of the S 10, this tunnel tube was extended to 1.9 km and became part of the new expressway. Until then, the eastern tube was only in operation as an escape tunnel.

    Building preparation

Archaeological excavations on the Unterweitersdorfer Trasse 2010

In the course of the construction preparations, grave fields from the urn field culture (late Bronze Age) were identified near Unterweitersdorf by aerial photographs . In October 2010, archaeologists began excavating. Twelve barrows with a diameter of up to 28 meters and a height of up to two meters were uncovered. The first excavation results were subsequently presented to the public in exhibitions in the neighboring communities of Hagenberg im Mühlkreis , Pregarten , Wartberg ob der Aist and Unterweitersdorf .

    construction

The construction of the 22 km long section south (Unterweitersdorf to Freistadt Nord) began on August 1, 2009 in two places at the same time: on the one hand in Unterweitersdorf, on the other hand in Freistadt. In 2010 the construction of the roundabouts for the junctions began and various construction roads were built. On May 25, 2012, the construction of the nearly 300 m long Satzingersiedlung tunnel and the Manzenreith tunnel (more than 700 m) began. Together with 13 bridges and the 800 m long underground route Walchshof, these represent the heart of the Freistadt bypass.

Section 1 near Unterweitersdorf was opened on July 30, 2012. The almost 6 km long section from Freistadt Süd to Freistadt Nord (Freistadt bypass) has been open to traffic since November 15, 2014. On November 30, 2014, the newly constructed tunnel under Neumarkt was opened to traffic. The existing pipe was then renovated and brought up to date with the latest technical standards. The entire route was opened to traffic on December 21, 2015.

The total costs for this section are given as around 689 million euros net. The forecast traffic volume for 2015 is 10,300 to 12,400 vehicles per day. For the year 2025, 19,000 to 40,000 vehicles per day are forecast in the south section.

    Completed sections

The completion of the 22 km long section took place in the following sections:

    section length Traffic transfer
    Unterweitersdorf section 2.5 km 07/30/2012
    Freistadt bypass 5.935 km 11/15/2014
remaining total distance approx. 16 km 12/21/2015

    North section

The construction of the north section from Freistadt Nord to Wullowitz (14.6 km) will follow the south section depending on the traffic requirements and the construction progress on the Czech side.

Due to austerity measures in the ministry, planning for this section was suspended until further notice.

    Freistadt North to Rainbach North

At the end of 2012, Asfinag resumed planning for the northern section and presented a preliminary selection of the route at the end of 2013. The S 10 is to be extended in a western bypass to Rainbach in the Mühlkreis Nord. Once the planning for the 7-kilometer western bypass has been completed in 2019, the project will be submitted. If there are no delays due to objections, construction is to begin in 2021 and the road will be opened to traffic in 2025.

    Rainbach Nord to Wullowitz

The planning for the further expansion towards Wullowitz will begin in 2020.
