  • The Arlberg Schnellstraße S 16 is an expressway in Austria and part of the Europastraße 60 . It runs for a length of 62.2 km between Zams and Bludenz and connects the Inntal motorway A 12 in Tyrol with the Rheintal / Walgau motorway A 14 in Vorarlberg . The border between the two countries is located in the 13,972 m long, special toll Arlberg tunnel , which is also the longest road tunnel in Austria . Overall, more than half of the route runs in z. T. long tunnels.

    history

    After the section from Bludenz to Braz, which was opened in 1969 and 1972, the Arlberg tunnel, which was opened in December 1978, was the next completed section. The further construction was carried out piece by piece over many years. The last gap was closed in 2006 with the Strict Tunnel .

    Road cross-section

    In the course of the Arlberg expressway, the expansion cross-section often changes. While the entire route on the east ramp, with the exception of the Zammer and Perjentunnels, has at least 2 + 1 traffic routing (three lanes with alternating overtaking lanes), a large part of the west ramp has only two lanes and no overtaking is allowed. However, since the speed limit of 80 km / h and the no overtaking rules are often disregarded in this area, serious accidents occur again and again. This makes the S 16 one of the most accident-prone roads in Austria and is therefore often popularly referred to as the “death route”. The ASFINAG made this area a so-called dowser "suppressed" because it said there was allegedly "earth rays" and "fields of power stones" that would lead to motorists to sudden drop in blood pressure and nodding. However, according to scientific standards, it cannot be assumed that this “measure” will be effective.

    noise

    The Arlberg expressway (here near Wald am Arlberg) needs a lot of space in the sometimes narrow valley. The traffic noise pollutes it all the way up to the peaks.

    Along the route sections without a noise protection wall that do not run in tunnels, official measurements carried out in 2017 in a strip around 500 m wide for 24 hours - continuous noise exposure of at least 55 dB (A), measured 4 m above the ground. In the close range (a few 10 m) to the S 16, this value increases to up to 75 dB (A). Some houses in Unter bings and Unterradin directly on the S 16 are exposed to non-stop sound with averaged 55 to 70 dB (A) - sometimes even despite the noise barrier. With a sound level decrease of 6 dB when the distance to the sound source is doubled, the noises from the S 16 can then also be clearly heard except for the peaks overlooking the Klostertal and Stanzer Tal.

    Expansion measures

    The second tube of the Perjentunnel was completed in 2018. The existing pipe will be renovated by 2020; In the meantime, the new tube will be operated with two-way traffic. The route between the Perjentunnel and Zams is then to be expanded to four lanes by 2025, so that the eastern ramp will only have fewer than four lanes in the area between Flirsch and Pettneu. A four-lane expansion of the western ramp, as was planned in the meantime, was deleted from the planning due to the low traffic load. A 3.5 kilometer long second lane near Bludenz in the direction of Arlberg should ensure that fewer traffic jams arise. In the Dalaas area, too, an additional two-kilometer lane should bring relief. According to current plans, construction should start at the end of 2019.

    Before the completion of individual sections of the Arlberg expressway, today's state roads were run parallel to the S 16 as the Arlberg replacement road B 316 .
