  • The Brucker Schnellstraße S35 is an expressway in Styria . It runs along the Mur valley from the Bruck an der Mur junction ( S6 ) to the Peggau / Deutschfeistritz junction , where it joins the Pyhrn Autobahn (A9).

The road connects the Upper Styrian area of the Mur / Mürz-Furche with the Graz traffic junction and therefore has a comparatively high volume of traffic. The average daily traffic is around 20,000 vehicles. There are continuously two lanes in each direction of travel as well as a structural center separation. The speed limits are between 100 and 130 km / h, in tunnels between 80 and 100 km / h. In terms of road traffic law, the S35 has the status of a car road and requires a vignette or toll . The state-owned motorway operator ASFINAG is responsible for operation and maintenance .

    history

With the release of the last section of the route in May 2010, the S35 is completely completed. The construction dragged on for the relatively short length of the route. Some sections of the route were already opened in the 1970s; Individual structures such as the Frohnleiten Bridge were built in the 1950s, which meant that extensive renovation work and new buildings were required just a few years after they were fully opened to traffic.

    expansion

The southern section of the construction project between Mautstatt and Röthelstein was opened to traffic on July 24, 2006. In the direction of Graz it includes the 725 meter long single-tube Mixnitz tunnel . The northern section between the Zlatten reservoir and Mautstatt with its two twin-tube tunnels has been expanded since 2005. As rock containing asbestos ( serpentinite ) was encountered during the dome driving of the Kirchdorf tunnel , the construction time was delayed by almost a year. The last section in the area of the municipality of Pernegg an der Mur was opened to traffic on May 29, 2010.

According to ASFINAG, the costs for the two construction phases were around EUR 260 million. All tunnels were driven according to the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NÖT).

The S35 has a motorway cross-section over the entire course, but was only signposted as a road in the sense of the road traffic regulations due to the tight curve radii . However, on some sections between Röthelstein and Peggau, the speed limit is increased to 130 km / h by express traffic signs (100 km / h would be allowed for an expressway). During the construction work, a new guideline came into force, according to which the Kaltenbach tunnel has a curve radius that is too small to be allowed to be driven at 100 km / h. This is why there is a limit of 80 km / h in the tunnel. After the installation of rain / wetness sensors, the Ministry of Transport issued a permit based on which the limit is increased to 100 km / h in good road conditions.

After closing the gap on the S35, a second stretch of motorway level (via S6 - S35 - A9 ) from Vienna to Graz is available in addition to the southern motorway . In addition, the S6 - S35 route offers an alternative to the single-tube and special toll Gleinalm tunnel on the A9. With the completion of the construction work, the new Styrian alternate signposting was put into operation around the intersection areas Graz West , Bruck , St. Michael and Peggau-Deutschfeistritz . In the event of road closures, road users can be redirected over a large area via signposts and electronic display boards, thus saving themselves a traffic jam on their route.

    Bridge collapse at Frohnleiten

On February 21, 2015, the bridge under construction over the Mur and Südbahn with the Graz lane collapsed in Frohnleiten . The bridge was just being rebuilt, as its predecessor had been built in 1953 and was now very outdated and in need of renovation. 800 tons of bridge parts fell over a length of 100 m, and the tracks of the southern runway were also buried. A minute before the collapse, an ÖBB train had passed the place. The cause of the collapse was the falsework , which was supposed to support the freshly concreted structure, but which collapsed under the load. The S35 , the nearby B64 and the southern runway were completely blocked. Since the bridge next door with the other lane was hardly damaged, the traffic on the S35 , as usual with the two-way traffic area, could be opened again after a few days. Motor vehicle drivers who took the alternative route Gleinalm Tunnel had to pay the tunnel toll. Due to the severe damage, the railway line had to remain closed for longer, which led to severe disruptions in regional and national passenger and freight traffic. After the collapse, about 20 residents had to be evacuated from their houses for safety reasons, as the collapse of a construction crane was feared. Since there was no more work on the bridge on Saturday afternoon, no people were harmed in the collapse. Due to the damage to the overhead line, the line defect was promptly noticed by the railway; shortly before the collapse, a train had passed the place. In order to make it easier for freight forwarders to adhere to delivery dates despite the interruption of the Bruck an der Mur – Graz rail link (goods, RoRo, people), the Styrian truck weekend ban was introduced. State government temporarily relaxed at the instigation of the Chamber of Commerce. Permits were issued in response to electronic requests.
