The Kirchdorf tunnel is a twin-tube motorway tunnel on the Brucker Schnellstraße (S35) and was opened to traffic together with the Kaltenbach tunnel as part of the closure of the north gap on May 29, 2010. It bypasses the villages of Kirchdorf and Pernegg in the west and relieves them of the heavy through traffic between Bruck an der Mur and Graz . It is equipped with a technical innovation, acoustic tunnel monitoring. In the tunnel, microphones were installed about every 100 meters, which transmit unusual noises (accident noises, horns, etc.) to a computer in the tunnel control room, which then warns the driver of dangers (accidents, traffic jams or tunnel fire) in a fraction of a second using an LED traffic control system , or block the tunnel completely. As with the Kaltenbach and Mixnitz tunnels, a blue glass roof is installed on the portals.

Construction delay

The construction of the tunnel was extremely difficult due to the occurrence of serpentinite (rock containing asbestos). Due to the safety regulations because of the health hazards for the workers, the construction time was delayed by one year.
