Fritz Berner

Fritz Berner (* 1951 ) is a German civil engineer . From 1994 to 2019 he was Professor of Construction Management and Director of the Institute for Construction Management at the University of Stuttgart .

Life

Fritz Berner studied at the University of Stuttgart and received the academic degree of a graduate engineer in civil engineering in 1975 . From 1975 he worked as a structural engineer and site manager ( shell construction ) at Wolff & Müller GmbH & Co. KG . After three years, he returned to the University of Stuttgart as a research assistant in 1979 , at the Institute for Construction Management , which was founded in 1964 and has been headed by Gerhard Drees ever since . Fritz Berner was active in teaching and research at the Institute for Construction Management until 1983. Before he left, Berner became a Dr.-Ing. PhD . His further career led him back to Wolff & Müller GmbH & Co. KG , where he worked as a construction and project manager in turnkey construction from 1983 to 1985 and as a branch manager in Karlsruhe from 1985 to 1987. Subsequently, in 1987, he joined the management of Müller-Altvatter GmbH & Co. KG in Stuttgart.

1994 as part of the appeal as a professor at the Institute of Construction Management at the University of Stuttgart, he became the managing partner , whose role, he managed the company until the end of 2006.

On January 1, 2007, the German turnkey construction areas of the Dutch Royal BAM Group nv were merged with Müller-Altvatter GmbH & Co. KG and Wayss & Freytag AG , Frankfurt. In September 2001 Fritz Berner founded the real estate foundation together with Willi Alda (then CEO of Deka Immobilien Investment GmbH ). The Real Estate Foundation promotes research and teaching in the field of real estate technology and real estate management at the University of Stuttgart. It supports the real estate technology and real estate management course and annually awards the Stuttgart real estate prize for the best thesis in the field of real estate technology and real estate management.

In 2007, Berner founded the Institute for Economic and Technical Real Estate Management - IWTI GmbH, to support the implementation of the results of academic research at the Institute for Construction Management. This institute specializes in real estate- specific processes in research, service and consulting. The IWTI creates expert reports, appraisals, evaluations and optimization models in the areas of the development, realization and sustainable operation of real estate.

In 2004 Fritz Berner was appointed as an expert to the PPP advisory board of the state of Baden-Württemberg. In 2005 Fritz Berner was elected to the board of the Vereinigung Stuttgarter Studentenwohnheime eV, which was founded in 1968 by members of the University of Stuttgart and the Stuttgart Student Union with the aim of creating student living space.

Teaching and Research

On April 1, 1994, Gerhard Drees transferred the management of the Institute for Construction Management to Fritz Berner. Despite his role as professor, Fritz Berner kept his active position in the German construction industry. From 1996 to 1998 he was elected dean of Faculty 2 “Civil Engineering and Surveying” at the University of Stuttgart.

In autumn 2001, Fritz Berner founded the Real Estate Technology and Real Estate Management course in order to close a training gap between technical and economic aspects in the life cycle of real estate. Since the start of the 2001/2002 winter semester, the course has seen increasing numbers of new students.
