Student Union Stuttgart
The Studierendenwerk Stuttgart has around 475 employees and is responsible for 15 universities with more than 61,000 students in Stuttgart , Esslingen, Göppingen, Ludwigsburg and Horb. The Studierendenwerk Stuttgart is a non-profit social enterprise in the legal form of an institution under public law and offers various services for students at state and state-recognized universities in the Stuttgart region .
The SWS Hochschul-Service GmbH was founded in 2001. It has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart since 2013 and, with 175 employees, is responsible for operational tasks in dishwashing, cashier, reception and building cleaning services as well as technical services.
history
In 1921, the university professors Veesenmayer and Braun founded the Stuttgarter Studentenhilfe eV . A college and student house was built in 1932 on the corner of Schellingstrasse and Seestrasse. In addition to the catering, there was a book and magazine brokerage, student trainee positions, a “discount department”, housing office and loan office. In the time of National Socialism , the local student unions lost their independence and became coordinated agencies of the Reichsstudentenwerk. The building was destroyed during the Second World War. On July 12, 1947, the Stuttgarter Studentenwerk e. V. founded. A new building was then started on Seestrasse. With the Student Union Act introduced in 1975 , the Student Union became an institution under public law . In 1953 there were 137 dormitory places, more than fifty years later, in 2019 there are around 7230 places. The name change to "Studierendenwerk Stuttgart", which took place in 2014, is based on the change in the Baden-Württemberg Student Union Act of April 1, 2014 and emphasizes the equal treatment of men and women.

André Völlers (board representative) has been the managing director (provisional) with around 450 employees since February 2020. Stefan Schneider has been the managing director of SWS Hochschul-Service GmbH with around 160 employees since February 2020.
Memberships and cooperations
The Studierendenwerk Stuttgart is a member of the University Region Stuttgart eV as well as the Deutsches Studentenwerk eV and the Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband Baden-Württemberg. In addition, the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart is a member of the working group of the Studierendenwerk Süd-West (ARGE) and the organ representatives are a member of the interest group of the Studierendenwerk Süd-West (INGE eV) for the purpose of training and further education. In the purchasing cooperation Süd-West GbR, the tendering and procurement of food in the catering trade takes place.

The Studierendenwerk Stuttgart acts on behalf of the law and, in cooperation with the universities and the state study academies as well as the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy, performs the tasks of social support and support for students. The Studierendenwerk Stuttgart is mainly financed from entrepreneurial sales: 74.6 percent is its own income, the semester contributions of the students (2019/20 in the amount of 67 euros per semester and student) amount to around 11.4 percent and 5.7 percent grants from the state .
Legal basis and organs
The Student Union Act of Baden-Württemberg of September 15, 2005, last amended by Article 4 of the Act of December 1, 2015 (Journal of Laws of 1047, 1052) provides the legal basis. There are also statutes. The Ministry of Science and Art exercises legal supervision over the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart and seven other student unions in the state of Baden-Württemberg. In the area of student financing under the BAföG, which is the responsibility of the federal government, the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart is sovereignly active, the ministry is responsible for this activity in addition to legal supervision.
The organs of the Studentenwerk are the representative assembly, the board of directors and the management. There are rules of procedure for the board of directors and the representative assembly. The chairman of the administrative board is the rector of the University of Stuttgart, Wolfram Ressel , the chairman of the representative assembly is the chancellor of the University of Education Ludwigsburg, Vera Brüggemann.
The Studierendenwerk Stuttgart applies the "Public Corporate Governance Code (PCGK).
service
The Studierendenwerk Stuttgart operates residential complexes, canteens , cafeterias and day-care centers for students. In 2018, a total of around 155 day care places were available in several facilities. In addition to the processing of BAföG -Anträgen and advice in financial matters pertaining legal advice , social counseling , a psychotherapeutic counseling and other social services to the core offer.
