Harry E. Narey

Harry Elsworth Narey (born May 15, 1885 in Spirit Lake , Dickinson County , Iowa , †  August 18, 1962 ) was an American politician . Between 1942 and 1943 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Harry Narey attended public schools in his home country including Grinnell College . After completing a law degree at the University of Iowa in Iowa City and being admitted to the bar in 1907, he began his professional life in Spirit Lake. Between 1914 and 1920 he was a district attorney in Dickinson County. He later held this office again between 1943 and 1945. Between 1918 and 1943, Narey was also the legal representative for Spirit Lake.

Politically, Narey was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1916 and 1960 he took part as a delegate at all regional Republican party conventions in Iowa; from 1918 to 1943 he was party chairman in Dickinson County. After the resignation of Congressman Vincent F. Harrington , Narey was elected in the by-election in the ninth district of Iowa as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC . There, between November 3, 1942 and January 3, 1943, he ended the legislative term of his predecessor. In the regular congressional elections of 1942, his constituency was dissolved. Narey declined to run in another district.

After his tenure in Congress ended , Narey returned to practice as a lawyer. Following his second tenure as a district attorney in Dickinson County, he was a judge in the 14th Judicial District of Iowa until 1959. He then worked again as a lawyer until his death in 1962.
