Bernhard Martin Jacobsen (born March 26, 1862 in Tønder , Schleswig , † June 30, 1936 in Rochester , Minnesota ) was an American politician . Between 1931 and 1936 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Bernhard Jacobsen was born in Tønder, which at the time of his birth belonged to Denmark , but shortly afterwards fell to Prussia . He attended public schools in his home country and immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1876. The family settled in Clinton, Iowa. Jacobsen worked there in a dry goods store until 1886. Then he went into business for himself. Between 1914 and 1923 he was a postman in Clinton. From 1927 he worked in the financial sector.

Politically, Jacobsen was a member of the Democratic Party . In the 1930 congressional elections he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the second constituency of Iowa , where he succeeded Republican F. Dickinson Letts on March 4, 1931 . After two re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on June 30, 1936 . During this time, many of the New Deal laws were passed there. In addition, in 1933 both the 20th and 21st amendments were passed. The terms of office of the President and the Congress were re-regulated and the prohibition law repealed.

At the time of his death, Bernhard Jacobsen had already been nominated for the next election by his party. His son William was then elected as his direct successor in Congress.
