Clinton is a town in the east of the US -amerikanischen State of Iowa and the administrative seat of Clinton County in Mississippi . In 2010 the city had 26,885 inhabitants. Together with DeWitt - which is also in Clinton County - the city has been named after DeWitt Clinton (1769-1828), the 7th  governor of New York . Clinton is the leading city in the Clinton Micropolitan Statistical Area .

history

Among the first European settlers who came to the area around what is now Clinton, it was Elijah Buell who built a log house and on July 25, 1835 founded Lyons , named after the French city .

Clinton was planned as New York by Joseph Bartlett in 1836 .

In March 1837 Noble and Sarah Gregory Perrin bought 136  acres (55  hectares ) of land that is now the city of Clinton. The family lived in a hut that stands on a spot at the foot of what is now the railway bridge. The eldest daughter of the family, Valerie, married Dr. Augustus Lafayette Ankeny , who took part in the Black Hawk War and came to Lyons in 1850. By Mary Perrin , the first child of European descent born in Clinton on September 26 1837th In 1839, like most of the early river towns, the town consisted of just a row of scattered huts, two shops and an inn. In 1855 the Chicago, Iowa, Nebraska Railroad announced that a river crossing would be built at Little Rock Island , in close proximity to Bartlett's settlement. The Iowa Land Company organized the purchase of Bartlett's land and on July 4, 1855 renamed the settlement on it in honor of the governor of New York in Clinton.

On November 10, 1855, a cadastre of Clinton was created for the first time , on the basis of which a land map was created. In June 1859, the railroad to Cedar Rapids , Iowa was completed. The first train, coming from the Illinois shore, crossed Little Rock Island at noon on January 9, 1860 and crossed over to the Iowa shore. In January 1864, construction began on a bridge from the Iowa shore to Little Rock Island , which was completed on January 6, 1865. The originally single-track railway bridge was replaced by a double-track one in 1909. The first road bridge from Lyons to Fulton , Illinois was built in 1891 and replaced with the current structure in 1975.

The first public school was set up in a log house next to the mill, which was built in the winter of 1855–56.

From the 1850s to 1900, the cities of Lyons and Clinton quickly became centers of the timber industry, and people spoke of the Lumber Capital of the World . Huge rafts of wood came from Wisconsin and Minnesota to be made into lumber in Clinton and Lyons. From there they were shipped to the growing cities or transported by rail. Companies such as WJ Young , Chancy Lamb , Curtis Bros. & Co. , David Joyce and Friedrich Weyerhäuser soon became the largest in the country. In the 1880s and 1890s, Clinton boasted 13 millionaires - more than any other city in the United States - among its residents. The most elaborate party ever celebrated in Clinton was Emma Lamb's debutante ball and the 20th wedding anniversary of her parents, Artemus and Henrietta Sabrina Smith Lamb, in October 1885. Another wood magnate, FC Weyerhauser, and several hundred other guests took part .

This time ended around 1900, as the forests in the north were largely cut down. The sawmills closed, but the railroad and river provided good transport links in all directions, so factories and heavy industry settled. The town continued to boast numerous ornate Victorian mansions, including the Curtis family home that now houses the Clinton Woman's Club .

The first road bridge between Lyons and Fulton was built in 1891 and replaced by the Mark N. Norris Bridge in 1975 . Clinton's second road bridge, the Clinton High Bridge , was completed in 1892 and replaced by the Gateway Bridge in 1956 .

The American Protective Association , an anti- Catholic organization, was founded on March 13, 1887 by attorney Henry Francis Bowers in Clinton.

In 1941, the Clinton High School team, under their coach Howard Judd, won the first (of a total of eleven) Iowa swimming championship titles . Between 1954 and 1958, five consecutive championships followed. In addition to the successes of athletes from Clinton, they won the Iowa Basketball Championship in 1953 and the Clinton Giants won the Midwest League Baseball Championship in 1991 .

On April 27, 1951 the water level of the Mississippi reached 6.30 m, on April 26, 1952 6.40 m. All this was just a foretaste of April 28, 1965 with the record level of 7.57 m.

In 2005, Clinton was added to the list of Iowa Great Places, along with Coon Rapids and Sioux City . This brought the city a $ 1 million grant from the State of Iowa Culture and Landscaping budget to beautify its buildings along the riverbank.
