Salvatore "Sal" Giunta (born January 21, 1985 in Clinton , Iowa ) is an American soldier. He was a staff sergeant in the US Army .

Life

Giunta is the son of Steven and Rosemary Giunta. He attended Kennedy High School at Cedar Rapids , Iowa. In November 2003, he joined the US Army. He is married.

Giunta received his basic and infantry training at Fort Benning , Georgia . It was first used in Afghanistan from March 2005 to March 2006. His second deployment lasted from May 2007 to July 2008. Giunta was promoted to Staff Sergeant in August 2009 and was stationed in the Caserma Ederle , the base of the 173rd US Airborne Brigade near Vicenza , Italy in the fall of 2010 .

Giunta's previous military awards include the Bronze Star , the Purple Heart , two Army Commendation Medals , the Combat Infantry Badge, and the Parachutist Badge.

Salvatore Giunta received the Medal of Honor for his behavior in October 2007 during a mission in Afghanistan. His unit was on the move as part of Operation Rock Avalanche when it was attacked by the Taliban in eastern Afghanistan's Korengal Valley . Despite enemy fire, Giunta managed to free a seriously injured comrade from the hands of the attackers and kill one of the opponents, where he was shot himself.

On November 16, 2010, he was awarded the Order in the White House by President Barack Obama . Giunta left the Army in June 2011 to study at Colorado State University .
