geography
Jackson is located on the Grand River about 100 km west of Detroit. The city area is 28.7 km², all of which is land.
history
On July 3, 1829, Horace Blackman, along with Alexander Laverty, a surveyor, and an Indian guide, crossed the Grand River and set up camp at what is now Trail and S. Jackson Street . Blackman hired Laverty and Pewytum to lead him west. After surveying the land, they returned to Ann Arbor and Blackman registered his claim to 160 acres at the cost of $ 2 an acre. Blackman returned to Jackson with his brother Russell in August 1829 and founded the city of Jacksonopolis . It was later renamed Jacksonburgh and in 1838 the name was changed again to the current short form.
Jackson is the birthplace of the Republican Party . What is indisputable is the fact that the first official meeting of the group, which called themselves "Republicans", took place on July 6, 1854 in Jackson "under the oaks". Previous meetings of groups that later formed the Republicans were held in Ripon , Exeter, and Crawfordsville , also known as the "Birthplace of the Republican Party."
Since it was very hot on the day of the meeting and there was no room for the large crowd in the town hall, the convention was held on the outskirts of the city by a group of oak trees. This place is now commonly called Under the Oaks .

Hispanics or Latinos made up 3.67% of the population. The per capita income was $ 15,230 and 19.6% of the population was below the poverty line .

The city currently has an income tax of 1% for residents and businesses in the city and 0.5% for non-residents who work in the city. Income tax provides revenue of $ 7 million, which is 32% of the annual budget.
