Zeph Stewart (born January 1, 1921 in Jackson , Michigan , † December 1, 2007 in Watertown , Massachusetts ) was an American classical philologist .

Stewart studied from 1939 to 1942 Classical Philology at Yale University and received the top grade on his master's degree . After the USA entered World War II , he volunteered in January 1943. Together with the Japanologist Edwin O. Reischauer , he was busy at the Pentagon cracking Japanese radio codes. He later served in London and Paris , where he rose from private to captain .

After his release (1947) Stewart went to Harvard University as a Junior Fellow . From 1951 to 1953 he interrupted his university career again and took part in the Korean War as a liaison officer. In 1953 he was appointed Assistant Professor at Harvard. He remained connected to the university until the end of his life and took on various tasks: From 1963 to 1975 he headed the Lowell House , 1977 to 1982 the Institute for Classical Philology; from 1979 to 1982 he was Vice President of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , of which he had been a member since 1968. Stewart's research interests included Greek philosophy and religion, the Latin poets ( Plautus , Virgil , Horace ) and Latin palaeography . However, he published very few of his own studies and was better known as an editor. He brought out the collected writings of his older colleague Arthur Darby Nock in 1972 in a two-volume edition. From 1973 to 2004 Stewart was also Executive Trustee of the Loeb Classical Library (LCL) and made a contribution to its academic reorientation.
