European Athletics Championships 1990 / participant (GDR)
The GDR DVfL had nominated a total of 72 athletes, 34 men and 38 women , for the 1990 European Athletics Championships in Split, the last major international sporting event in which GDR athletes competed. The nominees included eight Olympic champions and three defending champions from Stuttgart .
successes
The GDR team took first place in the medal evaluation with 12 gold, 12 silver and 10 bronze medals. With 34 medals, she also won more precious metal than ever before at European championships. The women in particular stood out. They won a medal in 14 out of 17 competitions they competed in. The 20-year-old sprinter Katrin Krabbe from SC Neubrandenburg, who won three gold medals, attracted particular attention. Her club mate Grit Breuer won gold over the stadium round in both the singles and the relay.
particularities
Due to the political turning point in the GDR in 1989 and the unification modalities of the two German states that were already clearly stated on October 3, 1990, the last appearance of two German teams attracted particular attention. The West German DLV and the DVfL of the GDR had also decided on a joint appearance by both teams, almost anticipating German unity. This was expressed in a joint brochure to introduce the athletes, joint accommodation and joint press conferences, which were also only moderated by a press spokesman. Nevertheless, in the GDR press the clear superiority of the GDR athletes over the West German athletes was extensively recognized. The DLV selection won three gold, three silver and two bronze medals.
Nominee athletes
The Schwerin decathlete Torsten Voss , the walker Kathrin Born from Potsdam and the 400-meter sprinter Uta Rohländer from Halle could not take part in the European Championships due to illness or injury.

Medals and participants per club
The active participants were spread across 14 different competitive sports centers. By far the most successful sports club was SC Neubrandenburg, whose 9 representatives took home ten medals. A total of five European championship titles went to Neubrandenburg in the individual disciplines. Furthermore, Neubrandenburg athletes had a share in two season titles. Athletes of the 1. SC Berlin, successors of the traditional SC Dynamo Berlin, were only able to win 2 medals despite the largest contingent of 10 participants. Only TSV Erfurt remained unsuccessful in the medal balance. The political changes have in some cases already resulted in the renaming or spin-off of sports clubs. In total, this affected 6 traditional competitive sports centers.
