Jens Carlowitz (born August 8, 1964 in Karl-Marx-Stadt ) is a former GDR athlete who was successful as a 400-meter runner from the 1980s to the early 1990s , starting October 3, 1990 for the FRG. He was European indoor champion in 1988, won two bronze medals at the 1990 European championships , in which he started for the GDR in the 400-meter run and the 4-by-400-meter relay , and in 1991 he became indoor world champion with the relay.

Life

Carlowitz won silver over 400 meters and gold with the GDR relay at the Junior European Championships in 1981 and 1983. On June 3, 1984, he ran a European record in Erfurt with Guido Lieske , Mathias Schersing and Thomas Schönlebe (Carlowitz as third runner) in 3: 00.07 minutes. He also started at the World Championships in 1987 , where he was eliminated in the individual and with the relay, each in the semifinals.

In 1988 Carlowitz became European indoor champion over 400 meters . At the Olympic Games in 1988 he was eliminated over 400 meters in the semifinals, with the 4 x 400 meter relay he reached fourth place in 3: 01.13 minutes. In 1989 he finished second with the GDR team in both the European Cup and the World Cup . In 1990 he was the last GDR champion in the 400-meter run in 45.60 seconds. At the European Championships in Split he won the bronze medal in the individual (45.27 s) and in the relay (3: 01.51 min, together with Rico Lieder , Karsten Just , Thomas Schönlebe ).

In 1991 Carlowitz won with the relay in world record time at the indoor world championships . In the open-air season he became the first all-German 400-meter champion in 45.49 s. At the World Championships in Tokyo, the German relay was sixth. In 1995 and 1996 he was again German champion with the Chemnitz relay.

Jens Carlowitz started for the SC Karl-Marx-Stadt (later: SC Chemnitz) and the LAC Chemnitz . In his playing days he was 1.86 m tall and weighed 76 kg. In the documents on state doping in the GDR that became public after the fall of the Wall , the name of Carlowitz was found among the doped athletes.
