Mathias Schersing
Mathias Schersing (born October 7, 1964 in Halle (Saale) ) is a former sprinter from the GDR who was successful as a 400-meter runner in the 1980s . His greatest success is the third place at the European Athletics Championships in 1986 (44.85 s).
With the 4 x 400 meter relay of the GDR, he was sixth at these European championships.
At the World Athletics Championships in 1987 , he retired in the 400-meter individual race and in the 4-by-400-meter relay in the semifinals.
At the Olympic Games in 1988 he reached fourth place with the GDR relay (3: 01.13 min).
In 1984 he set a GDR record in the 400-meter run on July 21 in Potsdam with 44.86 seconds.
In 1986 he was GDR champion over 400 meters (45.19 s).
Mathias Schersing started for the SC Chemie Halle . In his playing days he was 1.85 m tall and weighed 68 kg. His wife Petra Schersing (née Müller) was also successful over 400 meters.
