Andreas Knebel

Andreas Knebel (born June 21, 1960 in Sangerhausen ) is a former GDR athlete and Olympic medalist who was one of the world's best 400-meter runners in the 1980s .

At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , he won the silver medal in the 4 x 400 meter relay (3: 01.26 min, together with Klaus Thiele , Frank Schaffer and Volker Beck ).

At the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 1981 he was European Indoor Champion over 400 meters (46.52 s) in Grenoble

At the European Championships in 1982 he was second in the 400-meter run (45.29 s) in Athens.

In 1983 he was used at the World Championships in Helsinki in the 4 x 100 meter relay , which came in fourth place (38.51 s).

Andreas Knebel started for SC Magdeburg and trained with Jürgen Ludewig . In his playing days he was 1.78 m tall and weighed 70 kg. He studied sport and became an assistant at the Magdeburg University of Education. After the end of the GDR, he worked for the health insurance company AOK Sachsen-Anhalt .

In 1980 Andreas Knebel was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze.
