History of the AOK Saxony-Anhalt

The first mention of a fund for financial protection of illness or death in the region are found in the "valley of order" of Halle Pfännerschaft of 1386. In the 17th and 18th centuries were in Magdeburg furnished and around other trades other auxiliaries and provident funds, the Access was restricted to men working in the respective occupation. Pre-existing illnesses also made membership impossible. In the event of illness, the member received a fixed sum of money to pay for the doctor's visit, sickness benefits and death benefits were also paid out.

After the law on health insurance was passed in 1883, a new wave of founding began in various industries. From now on, not only the respective branches of industry or professional groups, but also the municipalities could set up health insurance funds, which resulted in the general local health insurance funds .

The AOK Magdeburg emerged in 1884 from the “general support fund for industrial workers, registered aid fund”. In the following year, various professional funds dissolved and their members joined the newly founded fund. The number of insured persons rose to 1,700 in 1885, a comparatively large number, the other funds at that time had an average of 237 members.

The AOK was not re-established in Halle until 1914, as the original plan to merge existing branch funds had failed.

At the end of the 19th century there were around 50 cash registers in each of the cities of Halle and Magdeburg, but their number fell significantly after the end of the First World War . Many of the professional funds were absorbed by the AOKs, so the AOK Magdeburg recorded an increase in membership from 30,000 (1914) to 53,000 in 1925.

In the summer of 1927, the administration of the AOK Magdeburg began its work in the newly built main building on Lüneburger Strasse, where it is still based today. During this period, new administrative offices were also built in Halle and the other cities of today's Saxony-Anhalt.

During the Nazi regime were the health insurance companies - as well as the trade unions and other institutions - into line . In the course of this, self-administration was abolished and the AOK buildings were taken over and converted by the NSDAP .

In 1947, the accident, pension and health insurances in the Soviet occupation zone were merged and the previous insurance carriers were officially dissolved. Some AOKs and company funds were still able to keep their operations going until the GDR was officially founded in 1949. The social security was organized centrally , the administration and ultimately also the organizational, financial and political management was taken over from 1951 by the FDGB .

After the turn was supported by the new Law on Social Insurance (SVG) that on 4 July 1990 and health insurance facility Act defines the health insurance system of the old federal states to the new transmit. With the help of the AOKs from Lower Saxony and the AOK Federal Association , the AOK Saxony-Anhalt became a self-administered health insurance company again after 57 years. The branches in Magdeburg and Halle resumed operations on January 2, 1991, and on May 3, 1991 the management boards were elected at the AOK Halle and AOK Magdeburg representative meetings.

In 1998 the AOK Halle and AOK Magdeburg merged to form AOK Sachsen-Anhalt, on April 1, 2009, BKK Sachsen-Anhalt and AOK Sachsen-Anhalt merged to form AOK Sachsen-Anhalt.
