As AOK - Die Gesundheitskasse im Saarland (AOK Saarland) was the general local health insurance fund for the state of Saarland . It was a statutory health and long-term care insurance fund . On March 1, 2012, it was merged with the AOK Rheinland-Pfalz to form the AOK Rheinland-Pfalz / Saarland .

AOK Saarland was founded on April 1st, 1960. In 1973 it moved from its original location at Försterstraße 6/8 to Halbergstraße 1. On October 1, 2011, it wanted to merge with AOK Rheinland-Pfalz and IKK Südwest . However, the merger to form the Gesundheitskasse Südwest was only approved for January 1, 2012 by the Ministry of Social Affairs, Labor, Health and Demography RLP . On September 6, 2011, it was announced that IKK Südwest had withdrawn its application for approval of the merger. Thus, due to the disputes about the new brand identity, there was no merger.
