Sven Matthes
Sven Matthes (born August 23, 1969 in Berlin ) is a former German sprint sprint athlete from the GDR who held the junior indoor world record in the 60-meter run for 13 years between 1988 and 2001 with a time of 6.53 seconds. This time was still a German record until 2016.
He took part in the Olympic Games , World Championships , European Championships , Athletics World Cup and European Athletics Cup (today European Athletics Team Championship) for the GDR. He also won nine GDR championship titles.
Career
At the age of ten, Sven Matthes started with SG Dynamo Hohenschönhausen (from 1990 SV Preußen Berlin ), the club where his father was a trainer, with regular running training. He quickly achieved his first successes. At the Berlin championships in 1980 he won the 60-meter run with a new record time of 8.1 s. In 1985 he was first over 100 and over 200 meters in the GDR's children's and youth party. At the Junior World Championships in 1986, the then 16-year-old was already part of the national team. At the European Junior Championships in 1987 in Birmingham, he won bronze in the 100-meter run and with the 4-by-100-meter relay . On August 23, 1987, Matthes won the 100-meter run at the friendship youth competition in Havana with a new GDR record in 10.35 seconds. In the indoor season on February 13, 1988 in Vienna, he improved the junior world record and the German 60-meter record to 6.53 s, which was only improved in 2016 by Julian Reus . A fortnight later he won the GDR championship title in the indoor hall with the seniors in 6.66 s. On the first weekend in March 1988 the European Indoor Championships took place in Budapest, at which Matthes ran 6.60 s in the semifinals and in the final. Three hundredths of a second behind the winner Linford Christie , he was in the finals at the same time as the Belgian Ronald Desruelles and the Bulgarian Valentin Atanassow , but after the final photo decision, Matthes only finished fourth. At the end of June, Matthes won the GDR championships in the 100-meter run of seniors in 10.19 s and set a new junior European record in 10.18 s in the semifinals. At the end of July at the Junior World Championships in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, Matthes won over 100 meters silver behind Andre Cason , finished fifth in the 200-meter run and finished fourth in the relay.
On September 13th, Matthes improved his own junior European record in Berlin with 10.14 seconds. A week later, Matthes retired in Seoul in the semifinals of the Olympic Games in 10.36 s with a 17th place.
On June 22, 1989, Matthes improved his personal best to 10.11 s. At the GDR championships he finished second behind Steffen Bringmann in 10.35 s . In 1990 he took second place in the hall behind Steffen Görmer . At the European Championships in Split in 1990 , a GDR relay team took part in major championships for the last time, but after losing the baton it did not reach the goal. In 1992 Matthes was German runner-up in the hall behind Steffen Görmer. At the European Indoor Championships in the Palasport di Genova in Genoa, he was eliminated in the semifinals.
Sven Matthes started for SC Dynamo Berlin , from 1991 he joined SV Preußen Berlin . With a height of 1.88 m, his competition weight was 80 kg.

- 100-meter run: 10.11 s (1989), this time was the German U-23 junior record at the end of 2011. His time of 10.14 s in 1988 is a German youth record.
- 200-meter run: 20.81 s (1988)
