Andre Cason (born January 20, 1969 in Virginia Beach , Virginia ) is a former American sprinter .
He celebrated his first major successes in the 100-meter run with victories at the World Junior Athletics Championships in 1988 in Greater Sudbury and at the 1989 Universiade in Duisburg, as well as with the silver medal at the 1991 Pan-American Games in Havana .
At the World Indoor Championships in Seville in 1991 , he won the 60-meter run . In the same year he won the gold medal at the World Championships in Tokyo with the US 4 x 100 meter relay . Together with Leroy Burrell , Dennis Mitchell and Carl Lewis he set a new world record with a time of 37.50 s.
In February 1992 he set a world record over 60 meters in the hall with 6.41 s, which was only undercut in 1998 by Maurice Greene by 2 hundredths of a second. In the all-time world best list, Andre Cason still ranks second behind his compatriot (as of March 2009). Because of an injury that he sustained in the US eliminations, he missed participation in the Olympic Games in Barcelona . There the victorious US team improved the world record in the 4 x 100 meter relay to 37.40 seconds - except for Cason, who was replaced by Michael Marsh , with the same runners as in Tokyo last year.
In 1993 he became the American 100 meter champion. However, his time of 9.85 s was not included in the leaderboards due to an impermissible tail wind. At the World Athletics Championships in Stuttgart , he won the gold medal with the relay as he had done two years earlier in Tokyo. He also secured the silver medal over 100 meters in a personal best of 9.92 seconds, only beaten by Linford Christie . In the fall of 1993 he succeeded in setting the world record from Barcelona at least one more time with the 4 x 100 meter relay. The time was undercut only fifteen years later by the Jamaica season .
He was again denied participation in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta due to injury.
Andre Cason had a competition weight of 68 kg with a height of 1.70 m.
