Maurice Greene (born July 23, 1974 in Kansas City , Kansas ) is a retired American athlete . He was twice Olympic champion and five times world champion. Until 2005 he was the world record holder in the 100 meter run .

Career

During his school days, Greene was both an athlete and American football player. But it soon became apparent that his performance in the sprint was better.

In 1995 Greene first took part in a major international competition, the World Championships in Gothenburg ; However, he did not get there in the 100-meter run beyond the quarter-finals. His next season was also disappointing: he failed to qualify for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. However, he did not miss the opportunity to watch the Olympic final live from the audience. This gave him impetus for the further course of his career.

In 1997, however, the breakthrough finally came. At the World Championships in Athens , he won the 100-meter race. In the following years he dominated this discipline and defended his world title in 1999 and 2001. In 1998 he also set a new world record in the 60-meter run (6.39 s) in Madrid , which he confirmed again in 2001 in Atlanta with the same time. In 1999 he equalized Donovan Bailey's 50-meter world record with 5.56 s. At the 1999 World Championships , he not only defended his 100 meter title, but also won the 200 meter race . He was the first to win both sprint distances at world championships. On June 16, 1999, he set another world record at a meeting in Athens ; he ran the 100 meters in 9.79 s.

Greene's most important achievement so far was winning the 100-meter race at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. In 2002 Greene lost his world record to his compatriot Tim Montgomery , who undercut the old record by a hundredth of a second. Greene was injured at the time and had to watch the race from the stands. Montgomery's time was deleted from the results lists, however, as he was suspended for doping abuse. Greene thus held the world record from 1999 to 2005, when Asafa Powell set a new record. At the 2001 World Championships , he defended his title over 100 meters.

Greene's main goal was to defend the Sydney Olympic gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games . He wanted to repeat the performance of Carl Lewis from 1984 and 1988. However, this did not succeed. He still won the bronze medal. In 2005, at the World Championships in Helsinki , he was only used in the 4 x 100 meter relay because he was injured in the US trials and so could not qualify for the 100 meters. However, it did not start in the final because the US relay was disqualified in the semifinals.

On February 4, 2008, Greene announced his retirement as a track and field athlete, as he no longer had the mental strength to return after his many injuries.

In April 2008, the New York Times reported that Greene had given Mexican Angel Guillermo Heredia $ 10,000 for doping drugs. Greene admitted the payment but claims he paid for other members of his training group. Heredia accuses Greene, the US judiciary's key witness, of providing Greene with the doping agents IGF-1 , IGF-2 , EPO and ATP . Greene, who was not convicted of doping by the courts, was a member of John Smith's training group, like other doping offenders who were caught .

Maurice Greene is 1.76 m tall and has a competition weight of 80 kg.
