Glenroy John Gilbert (born August 31, 1968 in Port of Spain , Trinidad and Tobago ) is a retired Canadian athlete and winner of the gold medal in the 4 x 100 meter relay at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , USA .

Gilbert formed together with Robert Esmie , Bruny Surin and Donovan Bailey the most successful season quartet in the mid-1990s. He made his debut on the big international stage at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul , South Korea , where he finished 21st in the long jump . At the Commonwealth Games in 1990 he was able to take 8th place in the long jump and in 1992 he reached the semi-finals with the Canadian 4 x 100 meter relay at the Olympic Games in Barcelona , Spain .

Gilbert was able to win his first medal at the World Athletics Championships in Stuttgart in 1993 when he sprinted to 3rd place in the 4 x 100 meter relay . At the Commonwealth Games in 1994 he won gold in the 4 x 100 meter relay and was fifth in the 100 meter sprint. Gilbert also launched at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer , Norway , and was there in two bob Fifteenth and in the four-eleventh. In 1995 he won the gold medal in the 100-meter sprint at the Pan American Games and was also able to make the world championships in Gothenburg , Sweden , victorious with the 4-by-100-meter relay.

At the Olympic Games in Atlanta, the Canadian team was not favored, although they won pretty much every title in recent years, because the victories had always been won in the absence of the US team. Nevertheless, the US team was beaten by almost half a second in the final of the 4 x 100 meter relay race, underscoring the claim to be the best team in the world in this discipline . Gilbert also reached the quarter-finals in the 100-meter sprint.

Gilbert and his teammates captured two years later at the 1997 World Championships in Athens , Greece , again the first place , just as in the Goodwill Games in 1998. At the 1999 World Championships in Seville , Spain, the Canadian team was disqualified in the semifinals and Gilbert finished his career after the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney , Australia , after his team failed in the semifinals.

After his athletic retirement, Gilbert worked for a short time at CBC / Radio-Canada in Ottawa and is now the trainer of the 4 x 100 meter relay team. He is also the trainer of the Ottawa Lions - an athletics club - where he is responsible for the sprint and relay.
