Bernd Cullmann (born October 11, 1939 in Idar-Oberstein ) is a former German athlete .

At the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 , Cullmann became Olympic champion with the German relay team in the 4 x 100 meter run (39.5 s; together with Armin Hary , Walter Mahlendorf and Martin Lauer ; Bernd Cullmann as the starting runner). The German relay came second in this race, but the US relay leading to the finish was disqualified due to a faulty replacement . Both in the run-up and in the final, the German relay equaled the existing world record with 39.5 seconds. Together with his fellow runners in the 4 x 100 meter relay, he received the Silver Laurel Leaf in 1960 .

Bernd Cullmann's competitive sports career spanned the period from 1959 to 1961. Bernd Cullmann started for ASV Cologne . In his playing days he was 1.80 m tall and weighed 71 kg.

After completing his sporting career, he pursued his profession as a gemstone cutter , which he is practicing as a family tradition in the third generation.

Remarkable

After Cullmann returned from the Olympic Games, a winners' reception was held for him in Idar-Oberstein. To this end, the city's schools and businesses were closed and the population invited. Several thousand people had come.

The gold medal as well as numerous photos and press articles about Cullmann's successes are permanently on display in the foyer of the Idar-Oberstein city administration. This was the first time in the history of the German Olympic Sports Confederation that a winner presented his medal to his hometown.
