The ASV Köln is in Cologne beheimateter sports club with a focus on athletics .

history

The ASV Köln was on 27 February 1929 as Academic Sports Association at the University of Cologne founded. In 1936 it was separated from the university and renamed the Cologne Athletics Association .

Until the early 1980s, ASV Köln was one of the leading German athletics clubs. However, due to the lack of sponsors, financial strength decreased from the 1990s, especially compared to regional competitor TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen . The continuous loss of almost all top athletes and a large part of the talented youngsters was the result. In addition, in 1995, just a few hundred meters from the training ground, another athletics club was established with the athletics team of the German Sport University Cologne .

From 1934 to 1999, ASV Köln was the organizer of the particularly successful ASV sports festival in the Müngersdorfer Stadium , where several world records were set and which in its prime attracted more than 30,000 spectators.

At the beginning of 2008, a community was established in the field of athletics with the neighboring athletics team, the German Sport University Cologne . This concentration of top athletics in Cologne was considered necessary from a sporting and financial point of view. Both clubs started together for about two and a half years as LG ASV DSHS Cologne and shared the training facilities. By mutual agreement, this athletics community was dissolved again for the 2010 winter season.

Today, in addition to athletics, other sports such as rugby , triathlon , floorball , ultimate frisbee and summer biathlon are offered at ASV Köln . For a long time there was also a basketball team that played three seasons in the basketball league ( BBL ) of the German Basketball Federation ( DBB ) and eventually became independent as BSC Saturn Cologne with a sponsor .

ASV rugby

Rugby was the second oldest department in ASV Köln until December 31, 2017. It was founded on March 1, 1951 and primarily promoted 15-a-side rugby according to the rules of the International Rugby Board (IRB). Their teams took part in the regular league operations of the German Rugby Association (DRV) as well as in various national and international tournaments. In the 2004/05 season, among other things, the first women's team became German champions in Olympic 7-a-side rugby and won the title again the following year. On January 1, 2018, the department separated from ASV Köln and continues its activities independently as a registered association under the name Rugby-Sport-Verein Köln .

ASV running team

The ASV running team is a training community of medium and long distance runners as well as some long sprinters within the ASV Cologne . The membership in history, the club is, however, mandatory, so that the overwhelming majority of runners competitions for the ASV Köln completed.

Emergence

The beginnings of the ASV running team go back to 1997, when the running department of ASV Cologne almost died out. Youth coach Jürgen Jaenisch , former indoor world record holder over 4 × 400 m and German indoor runner-up in 1964 over 400 m, acquired more young runners from year to year, so that from the 2000 season a solid and large base of medium distance athletes was formed. Since then, the number of members, best times and title wins have increased continuously.

On July 7, 2002, Philipp Legath was German runner-up behind Franek Haschke from LG Asics Pirna in the men's 1,500 m in 3: 45.22 minutes . Legath's best time of 3: 42.87 minutes also comes from that year. The most recent success at national level was achieved by Marius Piwonka, Erik Somssich and Christian Schreiner at the German Junior Championships 2007 in Hanover . In 7: 21.08 min they became German junior runner-up over 3 × 1000 m and thus gave the running team a long-awaited medal .

Training camp

Together with the youth team of the German Athletics Association (DLV), the athletes complete a two-week training camp on the Baltic island of Usedom every April . The runners form shared apartments and can manage two weeks of training together, sometimes with three units per day. In 2008 the team flew to a training camp in Albufeira for the first time .

National coach Henning von Papen writes a training plan that does not focus so much on units on the tartan track, but rather promotes athleticism, speed and endurance. Traditionally anchored in the training plan are runs through the hilly sections of the island and a 10 km test run.

ASV floorball

The ASV floorball department has existed since 1998 and was founded by Petra Rickenberg. The relatively young team sport from the family of stickball games emerged from the various hockey sports, from which the former name floorball is derived. In 2009, the German umbrella organization decided to use the international name floorball. It is a game similar to indoor or ice hockey, which can also be played behind the goals. When ASV Köln two variants are played, which is widespread in North Rhine-Westphalia variant Floorball Kleinfeld (three field players plus goalie per team) and the international version Floorball large field (five field players plus goalkeeper per team).

Teams

Since 2006, the floorball department has been offering youth training in addition to the offer for adults, which enables children and young people from the age of six to get started in the fast-paced sport. The first men's team has been playing in the 2nd Bundesliga North-West since the 2010/11 season . The flagship of the department is the women's team trained by Daniel Mahnken, coach of the German U19 women's national team. She plays in the 1st Maxxprint women's floorball Bundesliga, the highest division in Germany. The other teams of ASV Köln take part in the leagues of the North Rhine-Westphalian Floorball Association (NWUV). The second men's team takes part in the Regionalliga West. In addition, there are five youth teams in the age groups U9, U11, U13, U15 and U17, all of which participate in the respective youth league of the NWUV.

successes

The greatest success of the floorball department is winning the West German Championship 2010 (men's large field) and the associated promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga North-West. The women's team was able to take second place in the Regionalliga West in its first season in 2009/10 and qualified for the play-offs for the 2010 German championship in Kiel, which ended with third place. In the 2010/11 season, the women were able to win the West German championship and thus qualified for the German championship again. Also noteworthy was a friendly match between ASV Köln and the Belgian national team in 2002, which ended with a 3: 5 for Belgium. The department is internationally known for hosting the largest large-scale floorball tournament in Germany, the Floorball Festival Cologne, in which 16 top-class teams from five nations regularly take part.
