Summer Biathlon is a multi-discipline sport , the cross-country running or roller skiing and sport shooting combined. In Germany, the cross-country variant is subject to the sports regulations of the German Shooting Association , while those with roller skis are the responsibility of the German Ski Association .

The summer biathlon is run from April to October regardless of the weather and - like the winter variant - is organized by the International Biathlon Union (IBU). The IBU Summer Cup was the regular racing series between 2008 and 2013 ; Annual highlights of the season are the world and European championships as well as renowned individual events such as the city biathlon in Püttlingen in Saarland or the races at the Blinkfestival in the vicinity of Sandnes in Norway .

Different disciplines are held with the sprint, the pursuit, the mass start and the relay competition. The participants are divided into different age groups and according to the type of weapon ( air rifle and small caliber ). In cross-country running, the surface varies from cross-country routes to paved running routes. Only paved paths are used with roller skis. As in the winter original, running and shooting units alternate during the race in the summer biathlon. It is important to fire five shots at least once in a lying and standing position. During the cross-country run, the weapons are not carried, but remain at the shooting range . Successful roller-ski biathletes are usually among the world's best in winter, whereas cross-country biathletes - bearing in mind the completely different sporting focus - only collect medals in summer.

After the 2009 World Championships in Oberhof , the cross-country competitions were removed from the program. Since then, the most important competitions for the combination of cross-country running and sport shooting have been the European championships, in which no roller-ski races are held.
