2004 European Summer Biathlon Championships

The 1st Summer Biathlon European Championships took place from August 13th to 15th, 2004 in Clausthal-Zellerfeld . The competitions were only held in the cross-country discipline. There was a sprint and a pursuit race as well as a mixed relay for men and women. All five titles were won by Russian biathletes. Lyubov Yermolajewa won all three possible gold medals, Alexei Cheeparev and Alexei Mironov each won two gold and one silver medal. The Russian athletes won two medals in all individual races, the four remaining individual medals went to German starters. In the mixed relay, Slovakia was the only other nation to win a bronze medal.

There was also a sprint and a pursuit race and a mixed relay for juniors.

A total of around 100 biathletes took part.

At the start were 20 runners from seven nations. One runner ( Timur Nurmejew ) was disqualified for leaving the course. Nevertheless, the Russian representatives managed a double victory. Jaromír Šimůnek , Olympic participant in biathlon in 1980, 1984 and 1988, was 49 years old at the time of his participation.

The junior race won the Latvian Edgars Piksons in front of the Russians Pawel Tschuprijanow and Dmitri Petin .

There were 18 of 18 registered biathletes at the start. After the sprint on which the pursuit race was based, Roman Böttcher no longer competed . The two Russian winners of the sprint triumphed again, but now switched their positions. Kristian Mehringer was able to defend his third place. Luboš Schorný had only one miss in 20 attempts, Stephan Langer only hit three of 20 targets.

As in the sprint of the Latvian Edgars Piksons , the junior race won in front of two Russians, now Pawel Tschuprijanow and Anatoly Slavgorodskiy.

There were ten runners from five nations at the start. The Russian runners achieved a double victory. Only the first four runners remained within a minute of difference in the final time, all runners after that were more than two minutes behind the winning time.

The junior women’s race was won by the German Franziska Hildebrand ahead of the Russian Nadeschda Starik and the Polish Paulina Bobak .

At the start were nine out of nine registered athletes. Viera Kubacká no longer competed . Russian athletes took four of the first five places. Only the German Monika Liedtke was able to place between the Russians as a silver medalist. Lyubov Yermolajewa won her second gold medal after the sprint title. Barbara Ertl only missed one of the 20 targets, but could not improve her placement.

The junior women's race was won by Russian Olga Pachomowa , who improved from sixth to first place, ahead of German sprint winner Franziska Hildebrand and Russian Nadeschda Starik .

Mixed relay 2 × 3 + 2 × 4 km

At the start were eight mixed relays from five countries. Russia was represented with three seasons, Slovakia with two seasons. Of these, however, only the relay that was designated as relay number 1 before the race was included in the evaluation, the other three relays were out of competition. The Russian seasons 2 ( Yevgenia Mikhailova , Galina Mesentsewa , Sergei Proswirnin , Timur Nurmejew ) and 3 (Elena Mitsan, Natalya Solovyova , Alexei Kobelew , Ivan Bogdanov ) had also occupied the second and third place, the second Slovak Season (Eva Vladárová, Viera Kubacká , Ľubomír Palguta , Miroslav Kaniansky) would have placed last.

The junior race was won by representatives of Poland ( Agnieszka Grzybek , Paulina Bobak , Mirosław Kobus , Stanisław Karpiel) ahead of Latvia ( Linda Savļaka , Gerda Krūmiņa , Edgars Čakars, Edgars Piksons ) and Russia ( Nadezhda Starik , Olga Pachomowa , Pawel Tschupriatski ) Sjanov , Anzhda Chupriatski .
