The 1st IBU Summer Biathlon World Championships took place in Hochfilzen in September 1996 .

After the International Biathlon Union (IBU) had included the " Summer Biathlon " discipline in its program in 1996, the first summer biathlon world championship was held in the same year . The Austrian Hochfilzen was chosen as the host by the IBU.

The program consisted of four races consisting of cross-country running and small-caliber shooting . These included the sprint and individual races for women and men. The women had to cover a distance of 4.5 kilometers in the sprint and shoot lying down and standing. For a mistake, a penalty loop had to be run analogous to the winter biathlon . In the individual, the women ran 6 kilometers with four shooting bouts. One minute was added to the running time for each target not hit. The men had to cover 6 (sprint) and 10 kilometers (individual) distances. A season was not held.

Prominent participants known from winter biathlon included Ole Einar Bjørndalen , Wilfried Pallhuber , Halvard Hanevold , Yu Shumei and Liv Grete Skjelbreid . The most successful nation was Russia with two titles. The only athlete who could win two medals was Olesja Tupilenko from Russia. In total, athletes from six countries were able to place on the podium.
