The 17th IBU Summer Biathlon World Championships took place from July 17 to 21, 2013 in Forni Avoltri, Italy. The medals were awarded in two individual disciplines for men and women as well as in a mixed relay on rollerskis .

In mid-July, the World Cup took place comparatively early in the year, for the second time since 2003 in Forni Avoltri . Due to the early date, the world title fights took place at a different time in the winter preparation, which this year was dominated by the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi . Although the absolute number of participants increased again compared to the previous year due to the event in Central Europe, as did the number of participating mainly smaller nations, hardly any athletes from the strong nations started. Unlike usual, Italy sent athletes as hosts. Unlike usual, the athletes from Russia did not dominate, although they had come with some well-known biathletes. In addition to the gold medal in the mixed relay, only Anna Bulygina achieved an individual medal with silver in the pursuit race. The most successful nation were the hosts from Italy, who each achieved two titles, were twice runner-up and twice won the bronze medal. Lukas Hofer and the Czech Jitka Landová were the only two athletes who could win more than one medal with gold and silver in sprint and pursuit and thus were the most successful participants in the championships. With Victoria Padial , a Spanish biathlete was able to win a medal for her country in an international biathlon discipline for the first time.

For the cross-country disciplines of the summer biathlon , the Open Summer Biathlon European Championships 2013 will take place in Haanja in August .
