Dušan Šimocko (born September 29, 1983 in Banská Bystrica ) is a Slovak biathlete .

Career

Dušan Šimocko lives in Banska Bystrica and works as a sports teacher. He starts for VSC Dukla Banska Bystrica , his coach is his father of the same name. Šimocko made his international debut with good performances at the Junior European Championships 2000 in Zakopane . He was eleventh in the individual, fourth in the sprint and pursuit, with the relay, to which Matej Kazár belonged, he won the silver medal behind the Russian team. The junior world championships of the year in Hochfilzen were less successful , where he only placed in the 30 range in individual races. Šimocko also appeared in both junior title fights in 2001. At the European Championship in Haute-Maurienne , eleventh place in the sprint and 13th in the pursuit were the best results, at the World Championships in Khanty-Mansiysk he was sixth in the sprint and ninth in the pursuit. The 2003 Junior World Championships in Ridnaun also brought good results with seventh place in the pursuit and four in the relay. The European Junior Championships in Kontiolahti went even better . After 12th place in the individual, Šimocko won the bronze medal behind Andrei Makowejew and Michael Rösch , in the pursuit he only had to admit defeat to Rösch. The 2003 World Championships in Kościelisko did not bring any medals, but with 15th place in the sprint and sixth in the pursuit again good results. Likewise the EM in Forni Avoltri , where he placed in the top 20 in all four competitions. In the summer, the Slovak was able to finish seventh in the sprint, tenth in the pursuit and fifth in the mass start at the Junior Summer World Championships. With the relay he won silver with Kazar and Miroslav Matiaško behind the Latvians. In 2004, Šimocko played his last junior season. The Junior World Championships in Haute Maurienne again brought four results among the top 20, including a fifth place in the individual. At the European Championships in Minsk , he always finished between five and eight in four races. In addition, the Slovak won a sprint in Brusson as part of the Junior European Cup. Finally, he competed in the Junior World Championships in summer biathlon in Osrblie and again won silver, this time in the sprint behind Edgars Piksons from Latvia .

In Östersund Šimocko made his debut at the beginning of the 2002/03 season as 14th with the relay in the Biathlon World Cup . His first individual race, a sprint in Pokljuka , he contested only a little later and reached 87th place there. In Beitostølen he achieved his first top ten position in the 2004 relay as tenth. Appearances in the World Cup are rather sporadic for Šimocko. It was not until the 2008/09 season that he was able to achieve multiple honorable successes, including his best results to date with eighth place in the relay and 27th place in the Oberhof sprint . When he ran to 27th place, he also won World Cup points for the first time. In Hochfilzen he ran the biathlon world championships in 2005 and was 77th in the sprint there. A year later he was used at the Mixed World Cup and was with Anna Murínová , Jana Gereková and Kazar in the Slovakia II season and reached 13th place. The highlight of the season, however, were the Olympic Games in Turin , where Šimocko 56th in singles and with Pavol Hurajt , Miroslav and Marek Matiaško was 14th. In Antholz , the Slovak started again at the Biathlon World Championships 2007 , where he finished 73rd in singles and sprints and was 15th in the relay. In 2009 , Šimocko ran his best World Championship in Pyeongchang . In the individual he reached 42nd place, in the sprint he was 61st and missed the pursuit race by one place. He was also 12th with the relay. In the 2009/2010 season he achieved a new best place in the World Cup in a sprint in Antholz with 23rd place, and was able to improve this again with an 18th place in the individual at the 2010 Winter Olympics . In addition, Šimočko was 15th in the sprint and 15th with the relay.

On average, Šimocko achieved better results than at world championships at European championships. 2005 in Novosibirsk he reached 20th places in sprint and pursuit, was 12th in the individual and fourth in the relay. In 2006 in Langdorf only fourth place with the relay and thus a narrowly missed medal is worth mentioning. In 2007 and 2008 he started at European Championships, but without achieving good results. In the Biathlon European Cup he achieved top ten results several times.
