Kościelisko is a tourist resort in the Powiat Tatrzański of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship in southern Poland . It is the seat of the rural community of the same name with about 6750 inhabitants.

Kościelisko is located in the historical Podhale region on Voivodeship Road 958 and borders the Tatra National Park in the south . It is in Vortatragraben and in the mountain ranges of the Western Tatras and Pogórze Gubałowskie about two kilometers west of Zakopane and two kilometers east of Witów and 85 km south of Krakow . It is a ski resort at the foot of the Western Tatras with a large ski area and several smaller ski lifts. Kościelisko is a scattered settlement that was created when 21 shepherd settlements grew together.

Attractions

Kościelisko was first mentioned in 1623. The place name can be translated as the Great Church . There is a wooden church of St. Casimir in Zakopane style from the beginning of the 20th century. The place is part of the Western Tatras, in particular the Dolina Kościeliska is located in the municipality.

Along with the neighboring ski resort of Zakopane, Kościelisko is the most important tourist destination in the Vortatragraben . It is in close proximity to Zakopane and therefore in the most important winter sports region in Poland. Tourism is also the municipality's most important industry. While the local slopes have rather easy ski slopes, the biathlon track in Kościelisko is of international importance. The Biathlon Junior World Championships were held here in 2003 . The tourist infrastructure is very well developed.

Winter sports

The Butorowy Wierch ski area and several smaller lifts operate in Kościelisko . In Witów there is a ski area Witów-Ski and several smaller lifts.

There are two shelters in the Western Tatras in the municipality of Zakopane .

The rural community (gmina wiejska) Kościelisko is divided into three villages with school offices.

The municipality maintains a partnership with the Slovak city of Tvrdošín and is a member of the Twintown partnership project , which includes the municipalities of Durbuy (Belgium), Valga (Estonia), Osthammar (Sweden), Kobylnica (Poland) as well as Uusikaupunki and Orimattila (Finland).
