The Kuźnice is a district of the Polish city of Zakopane in the Western Tatras in the Powiat Tatrzański in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship .

location

The district is located in the south of the city at an altitude of 1011 meters above sea level within the Tatra National Park in the Dolina Bystrej valley . The peaks of the Krokiew , Jaworzyńskie Czoła , Boczań , Nieborak and the Nosal rise around the district .

history

The place was laid out in the 18th century as a warehouse for iron ore, which was mined in the Dolina Jaworzynka valley . The iron ore was transported over the Droga pod Reglami to the Dolina Kościeliska valley , then called the iron road. One of the first ironworks in the Tatras was located there . The smelters in Kuźnice were built in the middle of the 18th century. Since 1776 they were called Huty Hamerskie and employed 120 workers. The owners of the huts were initially Franciszek Rychter-Pelikański until 1783 and from 1807 the Hungarian Homolacs family, who built a school and an orchestra in Kuźnice for the working-class families. The owners built a manor with a large park in Kuźnice for themselves. In the 19th century, the Huty Hamerskie were the largest ironworks in Galicia . The water power for the smithy was provided by mills on the Bystra mountain stream and the thermal energy was provided by charcoal obtained from the Tatra beeches. The smelting works were closed in the second half of the 19th century and the large heating furnace was switched off in 1875. In 1889 Władysław Zamoyski acquired Kuźnice and shut down the smelters for good.

In 1936 the lower station of the Kasprowy Wierch cable car was built in Kuźnice .

etymology

The name can be translated as "smithy", whereby it goes back to the ironworks built here.
