Carlo Pedersoli, better known as Bud Spencer , sums up his life motto with “Futtetenne” (shit on it). The all-rounder is shaped by the mentality of having the courage to make dreams come true and to enjoy life to the fullest. Spurred on by the message of the films, the two fans Jorgo from Berlin and Marcus from Augsburg set off on an adventurous road trip to get closer to their idol. Through the two fan protagonists, the viewer not only learns how the cult around Bud Spencer and Terence Hill is lived, but also why the “fat man with the steam hammer” still inspires millions of fans all over the world. The film is narrated by the legendary German dubbing voice of Terence Hill, Thomas Danneberg , who cannot resist malicious comments or stupid sayings in the typical “ Schnodderdeutsch ”, written by Rainer Brandt . The film was voted number 2 of the best films of July 2017 by Moviepilot - the largest film portal in Germany, and number 5 out of 782 documentaries rated in 2017 as a whole. Furthermore, the film was voted one of the best films by Deadline magazine Year 2017 elected.

The film was the second most successful documentary in 2017 in Austria. They called him Spencer came in two different versions: as a subtitle version with original sound and as a dubbed version .

The film is based on the diploma thesis of the director Karl-Martin Pold, completed in 2009, with the same title “They called him Spencer”. The thesis deals with the possibilities of a fan-based interactive film production. Part of the thesis was a trailer for a fictional documentary about Bud Spencer. The trailer was published on YouTube and due to the enormous feedback from the fan community, Pold decided to realize his film idea and founded the production company Buddy Lane Productions.

Starting in 2012, three successful crowdfunding campaigns were carried out via MySherpas and Startnext and enabled the first filming with Bud Spencer and Terence Hill. Crowdsourcing succeeded in integrating hundreds of fans with their respective skills and resources (camera, interpreter, programmer, graphic artist, sound engineer, mechanic, etc.) into the project. They all worked free of charge and made their manpower and equipment available. They were recruited via the project platform and the accompanying Web 2.0 channels. The two protagonists and Bud Spencer fans Marcus and Jorgo were also found via the platform. “From fans with fans for fans” became the project's motto. The slogan "Be Bud of it" was established as a trademark, which numerous celebrities (including Wim Wenders and Karl Markovic ) repeated in front of the camera and thus identified themselves as fans.

During the nine-year production process, director Karl-Martin Pold wrote a second diploma thesis on Bud Spencer at the University of Vienna. Studied theater, film and media studies with the title: Bud Spencer: Films - Fans - Facts. In this work, on the one hand, the worldwide Spencer / Hill fan cult and its characteristics are dealt with, and on the other hand, the Spencer / Hill success pattern was analyzed. Recurring attributes (61 in total) were listed on the basis of which the common Spencer / Hill films were compared with one another. Many aspects and research of the diploma thesis flowed into the finished documentation.

The film has an unusually high number of cuts of around 5500 cuts. An average documentary has around 500 cuts, an action film around 1900.
