Camgaroo Award

The Camgaroo Award is one of the most important film prizes for young and independent filmmakers. It was launched in 2002 by Gabriele Lechner with the aim of promoting people's creativity. "Increasing digitization enables democratization in the film sector as well. Making films is no longer reserved for a few large studios. We recognized this very early on and therefore launched the Camgaroo Award," says Gabriele Lechner.

Originally, a specific topic was given each year, on which the filmmakers shot a video clip of a maximum of five minutes in length. In the first few years, the award ceremony took place as part of the Munich Media Days , whereby the award ceremony is similar to an Oscar award ceremony. The nominated videos will be shown in excerpts on a large screen in a cinema-like hall in front of around 800 invited people from film, television and the press.

In 2011, the Camgaroo Award was presented for the tenth time. 16 January 2011 moderated Thomas Gottschalk at Tele 5 the winning film in 2010 by Johannes Berner ( Game of Life ) to. It is now considered the largest independent film award in the German-speaking area. A total of around 70 films are nominated in 12 categories. The Camgaroo Award receives around 400 film applications annually. It supports filmmakers from a young age, for which there are special categories for young people up to 14 years and up to 18 years. In addition, ultra-short films (up to 5 minutes) in different genres can be submitted, as well as short films (up to 30 minutes) and documentaries. In the special feature film category , the best feature film projects by young filmmakers are awarded and funded.

The prominent actor Heinz Hoenig was on the jury from 2012 to 2018 . Other well-known jury members besides the initiator Gabriele Lechner are Wolfgang Oppenrieder (Project Manager, ProSiebenSat.1 ), Oliver Proebst ( PlanetTV ), Tina Kaiser (presenter), Markus Kleinhans (director), Eun-Kyung Park (ProSiebenSat.1), Anne Genenger (Vice-President Sixx ), actor Kristian Kiehling . The Camgaroo Award is an independent festival that does not require any public grants or funding.
