Alness ( Scottish Gaelic Alanais ) is a town in the Scottish Council Area Highland . It is located in the traditional county of Ross-shire , which was part of the administrative county of Ross and Cromarty between 1889 and 1975 . Alness is about 13 km northeast of Dingwall , 20 km north of Inverness and 5 km west of Invergordon near the Cromarty Firth , an inlet of the Moray Firth and had 5872 inhabitants in 2011. The Alness river of the same name flows into the Cromarty Firth at Alness.
Alness had a Royal Air Force base in the 20th century .
With Teaninich and Dalmore there are two whiskey distilleries in Alness. With Invergordon and the former Ben Wyvis distillery , there are two other whiskey producing companies in neighboring Invergordon .

Alness is about a kilometer north of the A9 , which crosses the Cromarty Firth about 7 km southwest over the Cromarty Bridge . Alness station is regularly served by the Far North Line .
Sports
The Alness United FC plays (as of 2018/19) in the North Caledonian Football League , an independent league of Scottish football that is not coupled to the League System.
