Invergordon ( Scottish Gaelic Inbhir Ghòrdain ) is a town in the Scottish Council Area Highland . The port city is in the traditional county of Ross-shire , which belonged to the administrative county of Ross and Cromarty between 1889 and 1975 . Invergordon is about 18 km northeast of Dingwall and 20 km north of Inverness on the Cromarty Firth , an inlet of the Moray Firth , and had 4075 inhabitants in 2001.
history
The present city was founded in the 18th century by Sir William Gordon on the site of the old Inverbreakie settlement . In 1828 the port facilities were built; The connection to the railway network took place in 1863. Until 1956, Invergordon served as a naval port for repairs and bunkering of warships of the Royal Navy , which is still evident today from an extensive oil store. In 1931 the Invergordon mutiny took place here after the Royal Navy had announced drastic wage cuts as a result of the global economic crisis .
traffic
Invergordon is connected to a trunk road via the A9 road , which runs two kilometers north of the city . The Far North Line serves Invergordon station on its route from Inverness to Wick and Thurso .
economy
Because of the proximity to the oil fields of the North Sea, the heavy industry for the manufacture of oil drilling platforms developed in the port . In 1971 an aluminum smelter was built. The reason for choosing the location was the supply of cheap electricity from the Hunterston nuclear power station . In 1982 the hut was closed again, which resulted in a sharp rise in unemployment. The Invergordon whiskey distillery has been a major employer since 1959 . With Ben Wyvis there was a second whiskey distillery in the city between 1965 and 1977 .
