Dalmore is a whiskey distillery in Alness , Highland , Scotland .

history

The distillery was founded in 1839 by Alexander Matheson and leased to the Sunderland family. In 1850, Margret Sunderland took over the management of Dalmore. From 1867 the brothers Charles, Andrew and Alexander Mackenzie ran the distillery. In 1874 the number of stills (was stills ) from two to four extended. After the death of Alexander Matheson in 1886, Sir Kenneth Matheson sold the distillery to the Mackenzie brothers for £ 14,500 in 1891. In 1917 the Royal Navy moved into Dalmore to manufacture mines. Part of the distillery was damaged by an explosion when the Royal Navy withdrew. Because Andrew Mackenzie and the Royal Navy could not agree on compensation, Mackenzie led the case to the House of Lords .

In 1922 whiskey production started again. The Malting Floors were replaced by a Saladin Box in 1956. In 1960 Dalmore-Whyte & Mackay Ltd. from the merger of Mackenzie Brothers (Dalmore) Ltd. and Whyte & Mackay Ltd. founded. The number of stills was increased from four to eight in 1966, the Saladin Box was taken out of service in 1982 and the malt has since been bought from other malthouses . In 1990 American Brands bought Whyte & Mackay and in 1996 changed its name to JBB (Greater Europe) . The company was bought by Fortune Brands in a management buy-out in 2001 and renamed Kyndal Spirits . In 2002 it was renamed Whyte & Mackay again . In 2007 Whyte & Mackay and the associated distilleries Dalmore, Isle of Jura , Fettercairn and Tamnavulin were bought by United Spirits Limited , a subsidiary of The UB Group , for £ 595 million . On October 31, 2014, Whyte & Mackay was sold to Filipino Emperador Inc. for antitrust reasons for £ 430 million.

production

The water for the distillery, which is part of the Highlands / Northern Highlands region, comes from the Alness River . The malt is obtained from other malt houses (Bairds Malt, Inverness ). The distillery has a mash tun (9.2 tons) made of stainless steel and eight fermentation vats (49,500 l each) made of Douglas fir . Distillation takes place in four wash stills (two of them with 16,500 l each and two of them with 8250 l each) and four spirit stills (two of them with 11.364 l each and two with 7340 l each) which are heated by steam.

Bottlings

12 year old Dalmore

For years, the 12-year-old was the only original Dalmore bottling on the market. Since 2002 there has also been a 21-year-old, a 30-year-old (for the North American market) and the Cigar Malt . Today's standard bottlings consist of the 12, 15 and 18 year olds, the Cigar Malt Reserve and King Alexander III. There is also a large range with special bottlings and the Rivers Collection.

In 2002, a 62-year-old Dalmore sold for £ 25,877 at McTear's auction, making it the most expensive bottle of whiskey in the world at the time.
