Tamnavulin is a whiskey distillery in Ballindalloch , Moray , Scotland . The name is Gaelic and means "mill on the mountain".

history

The distillery was built in 1966 by Invergordon like The Glenlivet on the banks of the Livet , taken over by Whyte & Mackay in 1994 and closed in 1995. In May 2000 the distillery was back in operation for about 6 weeks. 2007 Whyte & Mackay and thus u. a. Tamnavulin has also been purchased for £ 595 million from United Spirits Limited, a subsidiary of The UB Group of India. In the same year the distillery was put back into operation. In the course of the financial crisis in 2008, production was significantly reduced and the stills were modernized. The distillery has been running at full capacity since 2011. In 2014 Whyte & Mackay was sold to Emperador International Ltd. for £ 430 million. sold.

The water of the distillery, which belongs to the Speyside region, came from underground springs. A box malt house ( Saladin box ) was used for malting . The distillery has a mash tun ( mash tun ) (10.52 t) and eight fermentation vats ( wash backs ) (together 552,000 l) made of stainless steel , three wash stills (25,000 l each) and three spirit stills (23,200 l each) which are produced by steam were heated.

Production takes place mainly for the blends. Currently (2020) three single malts are also available: Tamnavulin Double Cask (40% vol.), Tamnavulin Sherry Cask (40% vol.) And Tamnavulin Tempranillo Cask (40% vol.)
