A germination box is used in malting plants to germinate the grain during malting .

The germination material is piled up in the germination boxes. Air can be forced through the "pile" from below for cooling. During germination, which takes up to a week, the green malt is turned over daily. There are several alternative methods for this:

  • The turner moves along the germination box and uses corkscrew-like screws, the so-called turner spindles, to gradually transport the germinal material upwards.
  • The entire germination material in the germination box is lifted and transported by a slide over the upper edge of the box into the adjacent box. As a result, in addition to turning, there is also automatic onward transport in the longitudinal direction of the system.

Water is added by means of fine nozzles in order to achieve the optimum water content for germination.
