Isle of Jura Superstition

Isle of Jura is a whiskey distillery on the island of Jura , Scotland , UK , based in Craighouse, the largest town on the sparsely populated island.

history

Today's distillery was completed in 1963 after five years of construction. The operation of a distillery at the same location has been proven since 1810 at the latest, the owner at that time was Archibald Campbell. The origins of whiskey in Jura, on the other hand, go back to the beginning of the 17th century. John Ferguson and his sons are named as operators from 1875, under whose leadership the building was restored in 1884. However, when the Fergusons could no longer pay their rent at the beginning of the 20th century, operations were stopped. It was not until 1958 that two locals, Robin Fletcher and Tony Riley-Smith, the owners of the Ardfin Estate, found themselves who, with financial support from Mackinlay MacPherson ( Scottish Brewers ), commissioned engineer and architect William Delmé Evans to build a completely new distillery. They wanted to counteract the shortage of jobs on the island, but they hardly succeeded. In 1985 Isle of Jura was bought by Invergordon Destillers and joined Whyte & Mackay when they were acquired . This in turn was initially taken over by JBB (Greater Europe) and finally sold back to the management ( management buy-out ), which is why the distillery belongs to the resulting Kyndal company . This was renamed Whyte & Mackay again in 2004 and in 2007 United Spirits Limited (United Breweries Group) acquired the company which it sold to Emperador International Ltd. in 2014 for £ 430 million. sold.

In contrast to the other former Invergordon distilleries ( Bruichladdich , Tamnavulin , Tullibardine ), the Isle of Jura was spared from being closed in the mid-1990s. Today twelve employees work in the Isle of Jura distillery. There is also a visitor center on the site.

production

The distillery's water comes from the Bhaille Mharghaidh spring. The distillery has a mash tun ( mash do ) (5 t) and six fermentation tanks ( wash backs ) (per 49,000 L) stainless steel. Is distilled in a total of four stills two coarse blisters (, wash stills ) (per 25,000 l) and two fine blisters ( spirit stills ) (per 22,000 l).

Bottlings

In contrast to the very heavily peated malt produced up to around 1900, today's Isle of Jura hardly contains any peat. It is available as original bottlings as 10-, 16-, 21- and 27 (“Stillman's dram”) year olds. It is also available as Legacy and Superstition with no age information. In addition to the original bottlings, there are also several independent bottlings from the Jura, including from Cadenhead and Signatory .
