Bruichladdich [ ˌbɹʊəxˈladɪ (ç) ] is a whiskey distillery in Bruichladdich on the island of Islay , Scotland .

history

Islay
View of the distillery

Bruichladdich was built in 1881 by the brothers Robert, William and John Gourlay Harvey in a perfect location on the edge of Loch Indaal , on the east bank of the Rhinns, the westernmost tip of the island of Islay. At that time, the company was one of the most modern distilleries. Much of the equipment from that time is still in use today. In contrast to most distilleries, which grew out of converted farmhouses, Bruichladdich was planned and built as a distillery. The buildings were laid out around a central courtyard that contained the kilns and a steam engine to generate electricity.

From 1929 to 1937 there was no production, after which several changes of ownership followed. Invergordon added another pair of stills in 1974. In 1994 the distillery was closed again until it was bought on December 19, 2000 by Mark Reynier and his two "Murray McDavid" colleagues Simon Coughlin and Gordon Wright for £ 7,500,000 and then completely renovated. Jim McEwan (previously at Bowmore ) was won over as master distiller . Most of the Victorian furnishings have been preserved. The devices, kilns and pipelines were dismantled into their individual parts and reassembled by a team of engineers.

In March 2007, Mark Reynier officially announced that he would be reopening the Lochindaal distillery , which had closed in 1929 .

On July 23, 2012 it was announced that Rémy Cointreau had bought the distillery for £ 58,000,000.

Barrel offer

To finance the reconstruction, the distillery offered interested parties the opportunity to purchase their own barrel from 2002. The buyer could choose the peat content, the type of barrel to be used, its size and the storage period. With the change of ownership in 2012, this option, which whiskey clubs and malt lovers from all over the world had gladly used, was abolished.

production

The distillery has a mash tun (with 6.2 t) and six fermentation vats (together 210,000 l). Distillation takes place in two raw stills (together 23,000 l) and two fine stills (together 21,000 l), which are heated by steam. In 2010 a Lomond Still from the closed Inverleven distillery was added. The company's own bottling plant has been in operation since May 25, 2003. In May 2004 the company opened its own cooperage and since December 2004 the malt has been made from Islay's organic barley .

Products

The distillery has a wide variety of bottlings. Until the last closure in 1994, only unpeated malt was used, which distinguishes Bruichladdich from the other Islay distilleries . Since it reopened in 2001, both unpeated and peated whiskeys have been available. In addition, there were always distillates with an experimental character such as B. a triple distilled ( Trestarig ) and a quadruple distilled whiskey ( X4 ). The classic unpeated whiskeys will continue to be sold under the name Bruichladdich . There are also the Port Charlotte and Octomore product lines for peated whiskeys. Some peated bottlings from 2001 to 2005 were also offered under the name Bruichladdich (e.g. Bruichladdich Peat or Bruichladdich 3D ). Since June 2012, the name Bruichladdich has been reserved for unpeated bottlings again.

The Port Charlotte is approximately 40 ppm peated phenol, making it similar to how the smoky whiskeys of southern Islay ( Laphroaig , Lagavulin , Ardbeg ).

A special distillate, the world's peatiest whiskey, is named after an old distillery (1816–1852) called Octomore near Port Charlotte , which was founded in 1816 by George Montgomery, who ran it until 1840, and which is now on the farm of James Brown. When the whiskey historian Alfred Barnard visited a total of 162 distilleries (129 in Scotland, 29 in Ireland and 4 in England) from 1885 to 1887 and described it excellently in his 500-page book The Whiskey Distilleries of the United Kingdom , the Octomore distillery was long gone .

The Octomore II has been distilled at Bruichladdich since 2002. The first vintage Octomore was brought onto the market at the end of 2008, its phenol content was 131 ppm. In the Octomore 2 it rose to 140 ppm, in the Octomore 3 to 152 ppm, in the Octomore 4.1 to 167 ppm and in 2012 in the Octomore 5.1 even to 169 ppm, which is unique in the world ( Laphroaig contains approx. 35 ppm, Ardbeg approx. 40 ppm).

In order to complement this dominant smoky taste with other aromas, a modification of this bottling was released in February 2012. The Octomore 4.2 Comus was stored in Sauternes barrels of a French winery for the last phase of the five-year storage (the exact period is not disclosed) . With the Octomore 8.3, Bruichladdich set a new unreached mark with 309 ppm at 61.2% alcohol by volume.

Another experiment is a gin , the ingredients of which are all from Islay . It was distilled in the Lomond Still and was marketed as The Botanist Gin .

The Bruichladdich Whiskey Academy

Bruichladdich offered the opportunity to work in whiskey production himself. In a five-day course, the participants were introduced to the subtleties of whiskey distillation. This offer was discontinued at the end of 2009.
