Inverleven was a whiskey distillery in Dumbarton , West Dunbartonshire , Scotland . Together with the Dumbarton distillery , Inverleven formed the Dumbarton grain whiskey complex .
history
Inverleven was established in 1938 in the Dumbarton grain whiskey complex. It consisted of a towering building that overlooked the mouth of the Leven and the Clyde . At the beginning only grain whiskey was produced, later also malt whiskey. The distillery was operated by George Ballantine & Son . The Lomond Still was designed and tested in Inverleven. The distillery was shut down in 1992 and the buildings were later demolished. Before the demolition, the buildings were captured in pictures by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland and during the demolition the subsoil was examined for archaeologically significant finds.
production
The water needed to make whiskey came from Loch Lomond . Firing was carried out with a coarse- burned bubble ( wash still ) and a fine- burned bubble ( spirit still ).
Bottlings
An official Inverleven single malt whiskey has never been bottled, but there are some bottlings from independent bottlers. Almost all of the production was used to produce blends . Inverleven was an important part of Ballantine's .
