Port Charlotte ( Gaelic : Port Sgioba ) is a town on the Scottish island of Islay and thus administratively belongs to the Council Area Argyll and Bute . Port Charlotte is located in the south-western part of the island known as the Rhinns of Islay on the west bank of Loch Indaal .
The village was founded in 1828 by Walter Frederick Campbell and named after his mother. Port Charlotte was the location of two nationally important whiskey distilleries , Lochindaal (also called Port Charlotte ) and Octomore . Lochindaal was founded in 1829 and closed again 100 years later, Octomore was only operated between 1816 and 1852. However, the nearby Bruichladdich distillery currently sells its own whiskeys with the brand names Octomore (very heavily peated) and Port Charlotte (heavily peated). Bruichladdich also announced the reopening of the Port Charlotte distillery on the Lochindaal site in 2007. The planned opening, however, has been postponed indefinitely.
